Robert Rutherford ’70 has been elected to the American International College Athletics Hall of Fame.

A standout guard on the back-to-back-to-back New England Regional Championship squad, Rutherford came to AIC after earning All-City and All-State honors at Classical High in Springfield, and played in all 76 games in his three seasons with the team, averaging 13.4 points per game, including 16.0 points per game in his junior and senior seasons, the latter of which he served as co-captain of the team. Both of those years saw him earn New England Regional MVP, and he closed his career as a student-athlete with a selection to the New England College All-Star Team for the 15th Annual Hall of Fame All-Star Game in 1970. He earned a selection to the 1969 Outstanding College Athletes of America as well.

Following his graduation from the College with a bachelor’s of history, Rutherford began his professional career with AIC, serving as an admissions officer from 1970-1973 before taking a job with Babcock & Wilcox Co. in New York City, where he worked his way up to personnel manager by 1978. His work ultimately took him back to Massachusetts in 1981 with the Bank of Boston as Employee Relations Manager, and in 1998 was named the Vice President of Human Resources for Bay Cove Human Services, a position he held for two decades.

Rutherford is a member of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. He was recognized by the Boston YWCA in 1990 with the organization’s Black Achievers Award.
