Dominic Smith ‘12, former sprinter for the American International College men’s track and field team, will be inducted into the AIC Athletics Hall of Fame as part of its Class of 2019.

Smith came to AIC in the fall of 2008 and made an immediate positive impact on the track and field team as a sprinter, earning 2009 Northeast-10 Conference Track Rookie of the Year after winning the 200-meter dash in 22.06 seconds.

By 2010, Smith had established himself as one of the best sprinters in the conference, winning the 200-meter dash at the New England Championships and being named Most Outstanding Athlete at the NE10 Championship. He also secured his first All-American honor as part of the 4x400-meter relay at the 2010 Indoor National Championship.

In 2011, Smith reached new heights. He won the NE10 title in the 400-meter dash at the indoor championship and ran a blistering 46.81 time at the NCAA Indoor Championship, taking second place and earning another All-American accolade; he followed that with his third All-American honor at the Outdoor National Championship.

Finally, in 2012, it all came together for Smith. In the Indoor National Championship, Smith blew past the competition, winning a national title, the first in the history of the College. Smith was not done either, taking All-American as part of the 4x400-meter relay and then two more All-American accolades in the same events at the Outdoor National Championship, giving him a grand total of seven All-American awards.

As the College’s first national title winner, Smith was awarded AIC’s President’s Cup in the spring of 2012, the top award issued by the athletic department “to the individual who has made a major contribution to the athletic program during the past academic year for outstanding ability, character and sportsmanship.”

Smith still owns several College records. In indoor, he has the top marks in program history in the 200-meter and 400-meter dash, and for outdoor, he owns the 400-meter dash record and was part of the 4x400-meter relay team that has the best time of all Yellow Jackets.

Since graduating, Smith has competed professionally, and currently works as a personal trainer in Texas.
