SPRINGFIELD, Massachusetts — American International College men's volleyball senior Victor Alamo, wearing the Yellow Jackets uniform represents far more than competition. It reflects a journey shaped by resilience, growth, and the courage to chase opportunity. A native of Gurabo, Puerto Rico, Alamo carries pride in both his roots and his role at AIC every time he steps onto the court.
Known among his teammates as responsible, genuine, charismatic, Alamo has earned a reputation as someone others can depend on. Whether in practice, during matches, or in everyday life, he values honesty, respect, and consistency, qualities that have guided him throughout his college experience.
Alamo's path to AIC began after a challenging freshman year at home, one that pushed him to reflect on his future and search for better opportunities. Determined to pursue a career connected to sports, he found guidance through one of his closest friends, Fabian Lugo, who introduced him to AIC. That conversation became a turning point, leading Alamo to enroll and begin a new chapter far from home.
Although volleyball now defines his collegiate career, Alamo's love for sports began long before his arrival at AIC. A lifelong basketball player, he has been involved in athletics for as long as he can remember, developing a deep appreciation for competition, discipline, and teamwork. Outside of sports, he values spending time with family and friends, relationships that keep him grounded while balancing the demands of being a student-athlete. When he arrived at AIC, he found a community that felt familiar despite the distance from home. The campus's diversity and welcoming environment allowed him to build meaningful friendships with people from places he never imagined, ultimately turning AIC into a second home.
That sense of growth and adaptation has defined much of Alamo's journey, especially considering that he did not begin playing volleyball until his senior year of high school. What often surprises people most is how quickly he developed in the sport, a testament to his willingness to embrace new challenges. His experience serves as a reminder that progress is rarely linear and that unexpected opportunities can lead to meaningful success.
As graduation approaches, Alamo remains focused on the future. He hopes to begin his career working in an athletic department and, while he is open to different roles, his mindset remains consistent—give everything he has, learn from every experience, and build a strong foundation for long-term growth. He credits his time as a student-athlete for preparing him with discipline, accountability, and the ability to perform under pressure.
Rather than pointing to one defining moment, Alamo says his pride in wearing the Yellow Jackets uniform comes from every opportunity he has to put it on. Each day represents the journey that brought him to AIC and the people who supported him along the way. At the center of that support is his mother, whose resilience continues to guide him. She is the one who pushes him forward when he feels he has no energy left and the person he calls to sort through his thoughts and emotions. Her unwavering presence motivates him to persevere, stay grounded, and keep striving for success both on and off the court.
From Gurabo, Puerto Rico, to Springfield, Massachusetts, Alamo's journey is defined by resilience, community, and purpose. As he prepares for the next chapter, he carries with him the lessons, relationships, and pride built at AIC, ready to apply them wherever his path leads.
