MANKATO, Minn. - Senior
Dominic Smith (Bloomfield, Conn.) won the national title in the 400 meter dash with a time of 47.84 seconds as the American International College placed 10th of 41 scoring teams at the 2012 NCAA Division II Indoor Track & Field Championships, hosted by Minnesota State University.
Smith earned all-America honors in the 400 for the second consecutive season after being the national runner-up last season. He is the first-ever national champion for the track & field program, which is in just its sixth season, and is the first-ever national champion in any sport (individual or team) at AIC. Smith also turned in the fastest preliminary time in the 400, crossing the tape in 47.98 seconds.

Glarius Rop (Eldoret, Kenya) earned all-America honors for the third consecutive season after being the runner-up in the 5,000 meter run with a time of 14:10.73, just 1.20 seconds behind Central Missouri's Laban Sialo who recorded a first-place time of 14:09.53.
Senior
Maurice Calenda (Bloomfield, Conn.) earned all-America honors for the first time in his collegiate career after placing sixth in the triple jump with a school-record leap of 14.90 meters, and finished 12th in the long jump with a leap of 6.81 meters. Freshman
Jeremy Antivo (Rahway, N.J.) finished 13th in the mile run with a time of 4:25.03.

The Yellow Jackets scored 22 points at the meet, just one point behind Northeast-10 rival UMass Lowell's ninth-place total of 23 points. Grand Canyon University captured the team championship with 54 points.
AIC will open the 2012 outdoor season March 24 at Westfield State University's Jerry Gravel Classic.
