Parent's School-Record Seven TD Passes Propel Football Past Merrimack 59-19

Box Score

NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. – Senior quarterback Rob Parent (West Warwick, R.I.) completed 14-of-21 passes for 328 yards and a school-record seven touchdowns to lead the American International College football team to a 59-19 Northeast-10 victory at Merrimack College Saturday afternoon.

The Yellow Jackets improved to 4-4 overall and 4-2 in the Northeast-10, while the Warriors fell to 3-5 overall and 3-3 in conference play. Today's win marked the fifth in a row over Merrimack and in the stretch the Yellow Jackets are averaging 57.2 points per game.

The previous record for touchdown passes in a game was six. Parent completed six scoring passes in wins over C.W. Post and Bentley in 2008 and Tom Guy completed six TD passes in a win at Bryant in 2000.

Senior wide receiver Davon LeGrier (Paterson, N.J.) opened the scoring with a 54-yard touchdown reception 4:47 into the game and AIC opened up a 14-0 lead following a 23 yard scoring catch for junior fullback/tight end Trevor Perryman (Centereach, N.Y.) with 5:26 left in the opening frame.

Junior wide receiver Omari Mobley (Hanover, Pa.) answered for Merrimack with a 14-yard scoring reception 50 seconds into the second quarter before the Yellow Jackets found the end zone on five consecutive drives to end the half with a 49-7 lead.

Perryman caught what proved to be the game-winning eight-yard scoring pass just 1:07 after Merrimack got on the board and capped the second half scoring with a 54-yard TD reception with 59 seconds to go in the period. Junior wide receiver Andre Samuels (Linden, N.J.) caught scoring passes of 28 and 14 yards, while freshman wide receiver Cal Brownridge (Newark, N.J.) pulled in a 17-yard touchdown pass.

Sophomore running back Mike Mayo (Roosevelt, N.Y.) scored on a five yard run with 4:01 left in the fourth quarter, while senior place kicker Ryan Brooks-Newton (Selkirk, N.Y.) converted a 25-yard field goal to open the fourth quarter scoring.

The Warriors finally broke AIC's scoring run on sophomore quarterback/wide receiver Joe Clancy's (Newburyport, Mass.) two-yard score with 8:59 to go in the game and sophomore wide receiver Shane Ferguson (Point Pleasant Beach, N.J.) closed the scoring with a two-yard TD reception with 29 seconds on the clock.

The Yellow Jackets racked up 367 of their 598 yards of total offense in the first half, which saw Parent complete 10-of-12 passes for 247 yards to go with the team's 120 yards gained on the ground.

Perryman finished the game with seven catches for 171 yards and three touchdowns. LeGrier had 163 all-purpose yards, including three catches for 91 yards and a score and 61 yards on the ground. Freshman running back Terrell Williams (Hempstead, N.Y.) had 17 carries for 132 yards, while Mayo finished with 36 yards on 10 carries.

The Warriors' quarterback tandem of junior James Suozzo (Everett, Mass.) and Clancy combined to complete 36-of-59 passes for 390 yards. Mobley had 10 catches for 90 yards, while Ferguson caught eight passes for 92 yards. Merriamck's rushing game was held to just 29 yards on 28 total carries.

Sophomore defensive back Markell Rice (New Rochelle, N.Y.) led AIC's defense with 11 tackles (eight solo), with two tackles for loss, one forced fumble, one fumble recovery and two pass breakups. Senior linebacker Terrence Holley (Bogota, N.J.) had nine tackles (five solo) with two tackles for loss and two pass breakups.

AIC's 59 points scored are the most since scoring last season's 58-34 win at Merrimack September 5, 2009 and was just three points shy of the school-record for points in a game, which was established in a 62-7 win at Stonehill September 18, 1999.

With his 328 passing yards today, Parent became just the second quarterback in program history to pass for over 7,000 yards. He has now thrown for 7,131 yards in his 36 career games played.

The Yellow Jackets will close out the home portion of their 2010 schedule November 6 when they host Pace University at 1 p.m. at Ronald J. Abdow Field.
