Volleyball snaps losing streak in decisive fashion over Bentley

WALTHAM, Massachusetts The American International College volleyball team snapped a two-game losing streak as they beat the Falcons of Bentley University 3-0.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • From the get-go, the first set was all AIC, as they jumped out to an early 8-2 lead and forced a Bentley timeout. After the timeout, the Falcons scored once before the Yellow Jackets went up 11-3. Down 19-9 and coming out of their own timeout, Bentley took four of the next five points before the Yellow Jackets closed the set out 25-15.
  • Just like the first set, the Yellow Jackets went ahead early and never looked back. After leading 12-3, the Yellow Jackets kept rolling to a 21-9 lead before taking the second set 25-11.
  • Up 5-3, AIC went on a 6-0 run to extend their lead to seven, 11-3. The Yellow Jackets led 14-7 when they went on a 5-0 run to make it a 12 point game, 19-7. Senior defensive specialist Mary Kelly ended the match with an ace to give the Yellow Jackets the set 25-14 and the match 3-0.

GAME NOTES:
  • For the first time in known rally scoring program history, the Yellow Jackets held the lead for the entire match. In addition, the Yellow Jackets and Falcons were never tied in the match.
  • With a kill in the third set against Holy Family on September 7, senior outside hitterDiva Rivas-Reyesbecame the fifth player in AIC program history with 1,000 career kills. She recently jumped into fourth place in program history with 1,086 kills. She currently trails Sarah Neaves, who has 1,148 career kills, by 62.
  • Junior outside hitterJana Poticjumped into sixth place in program history in kills against Stonehill College on September 11. She currently has 983 kills. She trails Jamie Hutchison by 19 kills for fifth place.
  • Rivas-Reyes is currently fourth place in program history in points with 1,154. She currently trails Sarah Neaves who scored 1,317 points in her career at AIC. Right behind her is teammateJana Potic, who has scored 1,147 points in her career so far.

NEXT UP:
  • The Yellow Jackets will host the Hawks of Saint Anselm on Thursday, September 27 at 7 p.m. The team will be honoring the cultures of their players from Hawaii on Thursday.
