The American International College men's basketball team will host the Southern Connecticut State Owls in a Northeast-10 Conference contest at the Henry Butova Gymnasium, with a scheduled tip-off of 7:30 p.m.
LAST TIME OUT:The Yellow Jackets mounted a late comeback effort, but were never able to grab the lead back as they fell to the Adelphi Panthers 94-84 in Garden City, N.Y. on November 19.
Rasheed Howard had two critical baskets to cut the deficit to 85-80 with under three to play, only to see the Panthers hit a pair of threes to ultimately put the game away. Adelphi was able to push their edge to double digits at several points in the game, leading by as much as 15 in the first half and by a dozen in the second half. That lead came despite
Tahlib Swan's double-double, as he dropped 23 points and added 10 rebounds to lead AIC in both categories.
The Owls were in Philadelphia on that day and beat the University of the Sciences 81-71. After a back-and-forth first half that saw SCSU take a slim 33-32 lead into the break, Southern's offense erupted, with Joey Wallace scoring 12 of his 19 points and Isaiah McLeod adding 10 of his 12 for the game in the second half. Michael Mallory was consistent throughout, scoring 16 in the first and 18 in the second for a season-best 34 while contributing five assists, two blocks and two steals as well.
LAST TIME THEY MET:Southern Connecticut topped AIC twice last season, winning 107-94 on November 24, 2015 in New Haven and 89-77 on February 10, 2016 in Springfield. Desmond Williams scored 25 for SCSU in the contest at the Butova Gym, leading all scorers, as AIC had difficulty getting shots off and were out-rebounded 58-33. The Owls attempted 83 shots to AIC's 56, and the Jackets' leading scorer,
Jayvon Pitts-Young, scored 12 of his 15 points on the day at the free-throw line, and all 15 came in the first half.
PLAYER OF THE WEEK FOR SCSU:Mallory scored 31.5 points per game in two matches last week for the Owls, earning Northeast-10 Player of the Week honors from the conference office; he also averaged 4.0 rebounds and 3.0 assists per game in the contests. At 28.3 points per game, he is the NE-10's leading scorer for the conference's best offense.
TAKE CARE OF THE BALL:The Yellow Jackets have done well protecting the rock when in possession; with just 13.0 turnovers per game, AIC is third in the NE-10, behind only Saint Anselm and Le Moyne. No team generates fewer turnovers in the NE-10 than the Owls, whose opponents average just 9.8 turnovers per contest, the only team in the conference which does not force a double digit number on average.
NEXT UP:The team travels to Philadelphia for a rematch with Holy Family on November 26 at 2:00 p.m. to start a three-game road trip.
