PHILADELPHIA, Pennsylvania - The American International College women's volleyball team ran its season-opening win streak to six matches and 18 sets by defeating Bloomsburg University 25-12, 25-10, 25-22 and then downing East Stroudsburg University 25-17, 25-9, 28-26 at Jefferson University on Friday, September 4.
AIC is now 6-0 on the season.
Against the Huskies, AIC once again demonstrated its dominance on both sides. The Yellow Jackets landed 27 kills against just six errors in the first two sets, hitting above .400 and holding Bloomsburg to negative attack percentages. Those numbers led to strong runs, and set points scored on a kill by
Selin Guler and the defense forcing three errors in the final four points along with aÂ
Yuleishka Alvelo Melendez ace.
The Huskies did push back in the third, and kept the set close, tying things at 21-21 before AIC put it away;
Carissa Michel delivered the final blow on a swing down from
Selen Ozgur.
Against the Warriors, AIC rolled to an early lead and handled business again in the opening two sets. The blocking in particular was strong;
Janelys Perez Cortes made a solo block to get AIC to set point in the first, and
Victoria Soto Burgos and Michel followed with a tandem stop to finish things off.Â
As with the first match, East Stroudsburg had a much better third, outhitting the Yellow Jackets. However, AIC was able to rally back from an early deficit of 7-1, with
Lajla Rasljanin and Ozgur blocking a swing on what was set point for the Warriors to tie the score at 24-24. Ultimately, the Warriors gave away the final two points of the match on errors to finish things off.
Michel led AIC's attack in the opener with nine kills, while Rasljanin landed eight in the second, hitting an incredible .727 as she only failed to score on three swings and made no errors.
Victoria Mendez made 16 assists in each match, with Ozgur leading the East Stroudsburg contest with 18.
Mia Berdecia had 17 digs across the six sets.Â
AIC continues the weekend on Saturday, September 5 against host Jefferson at 10:00 a.m. and finishes against Holy Family University at 12:30 p.m.
