GARDEN CITY, New York - The American International College women's volleyball team turned in another pair of shutout victories, defeating Georgian Court University 25-21, 25-11, 25-7 and then downing Northeast 10 Conference foe Adelphi University 25-18, 25-20, 25-17 in a nonleague pair at Adelphi's Center for Recreation and Sport.
AIC is now 4-0 on the season.
It was an inauspicious start for the Yellow Jackets in their second day in the Empire State; AIC fell behind 17-8 after surrendering an ace. However,
Janelys Perez Cortes slammed a kill down, and from there the Yellow Jackets locked in, scoring 13 points in a row. Three of those were aces by Perez Cortes.
Lajla Rasljanin finished the set with a kill for the 1-0 lead.
From there, the Yellow Jackets offense and defense both showcased their abilities. AIC hit .321 in the second, led by
Carissa Michel's five kills, and held the Lions to a -.087 attack percentage. Those numbers were even more lopsided in the third, with AIC hitting .550 and Georgian Court -.154. The Yellow Jackets made just three errors in the final set, and
Selen Ozgur's match-point ace locked in the 25-7 set score and 3-0 win.
That led up to the marquee matchup of the weekend, a rematch of the 2025 NE10 Semifinal between the Yellow Jackets and Panthers. AIC's offense was on full display again as the team accumulated 17 kills, with Perez Cortes terminating on six of her 12 swings, while
Selin Guler made eight digs to help AIC to the opening-set victory.
AIC continued its aggressive attack in the second, pulling away midway through and leaning on Michel and Perez Cortez, who landed six and five of the 16 AIC finishes in the set. The numbers grew more impressive in the third as AIC hit .351 to close out the sweep. Once more, it was Perez Cortes, with seven of AIC's 17 kills, and again Guler gave AIC match point on an ace to cap off a 4-0 weekend.
Michel led the team with 24 kills on the day in six sets, while Perez Cortes collected 21 and hit .514 across her four sets of play. Michel also led AIC with 20 digs on the day, one of five players with double-digit dig totals. Rasljanin made six blocks and added 11 kills.
Victoria Mendez dished 49 assists in four sets, while Ozgur made 26 in three sets.
AIC will head to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania for its next weekend of play, at the Jefferson Invitational. The Yellow Jackets will face Bloomsburg University and East Stroudsburg University on Friday, September 4 and host Jefferson University and Holy Family University on Saturday, September 5.
