SPRINGFIELD, Massachusetts -
Seven Gillingham became the sixth player in the history of American International College men's lacrosse to score 100 career points, but the Yellow Jackets fell 16-6 to Bentley University in Northeast 10 Conference play on Saturday, April 4.
AIC is now 1-10 overall and 0-5 in the NE10.
Bentley roared out to a 3-0 lead in the first 3:58, but AIC's defense was able to slow them somewhat, and Gillingham fed Camden Macdonald for AIC's first of the game at 8:37. The teams then traded goals, with
Jordan Fox springing
Riley McGraw for a pole goal at 11:13, but the Falcons netted the remaining three of the quarter for a 7-2 lead.
It took nearly seven minutes for the Falcons to strike in the second, but they scored two before AIC's first, a solo effort by Gillingham at 11:30 that Bentley responded to just 19 seconds later. Gillingham then set up
Matt Smith with a pass that pulled him past the defender and into the middle lane for a strike at 13:01, leaving AIC down 10-4 at the break.
Bentley scored first out of halfitme, and then Gillingham made history, feeding
Jordan Boyenko atop the crease for a goal at 5:13.Â
Bentley scored five more times across the rest of the third and fourth, and
Jacob Ligor closed the scoring with a power move through a defender and a turnaround shot at 14:18 for the 16-6 final.
AIC's man-down defense went 6-for-6 on the day thanks in large part to yeoman work by
Nicholas Kendall, who made 21 saves in the setback as well as registered four caused turnovers and even put a shot on goal at the other end.
Gillingham joined an exclusive club at AIC; the other five 100-point scorers are the late Aaron McNab, who leads the program with 160 points, Ben Reese at 155, Dan MacIsaac with 106, Bobby Spano with 103, and Rusty Stone with 102. Of those, only McNab, Reese, and Spano reached the mark in three seasons the way Gillingham did.Â
He also moved into sole possession of second place on AIC's single-season assists record list, passing McNab and
Tyler Goode; McNab had two 25-assists seasons, and Goode matched that two campaigns ago before setting the new high-water mark with 43 last campaign. Gillingham has 27 on the season, and his 55 career helpers trail only McNab's 73 and Goode's 68 for the most in an AIC career.
The team continues its four-game homestand on Wednesday, April 8 against Saint Anselm College at 6:00 p.m.
