Baseball sweeps two-game set at Palm Beach Atlantic

WEST PALM BEACH, Florida - The American International College baseball team found a way, sweeping Palm Beach Atlantic University 7-3 and 8-4 on Saturday, March 7.

AIC is now 4-7 on the season.

The Sailfish jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first, with a single, wild pitch, and single to bring in the run. AIC just as quickly tied things up, as Josh Frometa led off with a single in the second and stole second. He came in to score on a throwing error, a harbinger of things to come on the day.

In the fourth, Frometa led off with a walk, and then a pickoff throw went awry, allowing the grad student to advance to third. That turned into AIC's second run, as Albis Felix hit a grounder to short that brought Frometa home.

The Sailfish rebounded to tie the game with a two-out double, single, and walk, but AIC regained the lead in the fifth as Yeudy Ramirez led off with a single to right and stole second, scoring on the next play as Cole Patterson drilled a liner to left. Aidan Streeter walked, and the duo advanced on a groundout, and then Frometa socked a double to the gap in left, plating the pair and pushing AIC up 5-2.

On the other side, Leo Vitale was dealing for AIC, and he fanned three batters of six in consecutive 1-2-3 frames to preserve the visiting team's lead. The team added more support in the seventh, with Alex Dye singling and Frometa finding the gap again before Wesley Alfonso singled to put them both back to the plate.

The Sailfish did score one in the seventh, but Vitale induced a groundout to end the game and earn his second win in a row; he scattered six hits across the complete game, fanning eight against two walks and two hit batters in a 109-pitch performance.

Palm Beach Atlantic looked to rebound, and scored two unearned runs in the first frame to quickly take the lead.

That lasted until the fourth, when the Yellow Jackets had an offensive eruption that had little to do with actually using their bats; Richie Segura and Peyton Torre both walked, and Sam Tanous bunted to sacrifice them over, reaching on a miscue to load the bases. Ramirez, Patterson, Streeter, and Frometa each walked, with all four forcing runs home to give AIC a 4-2 lead in an inning without a hit.

Three straight singles in the third pulled the hosts back within one, and a leadoff home run in the fifth tied the game. Incredibly, AIC then finally picked up its first hit of the game, a Segura double, in the sixth, with the score tied 4-4.

In the seventh, the inexplicability of the game reached a new peak. Patterson was hit by a pitch and then took second on a wild pitch; Streeter walked, and both advanced on another wild toss from the mound. Frometa then hit a grounder to third that was mishandled, scoring Patterson, and after Frometa took second base, both scored on another error, this time a throwing mistake from short with Leandro Guevara at the plate. Guevara then scored himself on a failed pickoff after Segura walked, giving AIC an 8-4 advantage.

Brandon Morrison, who had allowed just one hit in the sixth to keep the game tied, slammed the door in the seventh, with two strikeouts and a flyout to earn his second win at AIC.

Alvin Gomez went five innings, allowing four runs, only two of which were earned, on six hits with no walks and two strikeouts.

The two teams will finish the series on Sunday, March 8 at noon.
