HOOKSETT, New Hampshire - The American International College baseball team was swept by Southern New Hampshire University in a Northeast 10 Conference four-game series, falling in walkoffs of 4-3 and 13-12 on Sunday, March 29 and then 26-3 and 19-6 on Monday, March 30.
AIC is now 10-14 overall and 6-6 in the NE10.
The Sunday opener was the only low-scoring game; the teams had just three hits combined through five innings and AIC's first run came in the seventh when
Richie Segura scored on a wild pitch;
Aidan Streeter then scored
Wesley Alfonso with a base hit that put AIC up 2-1. The Penmen answered with solo shots in the eighth to take a 3-2 lead, but
Josh Mikulski scored in the ninth, again on a wild pitch. The Penmen walked it off, however, on a Kyle Lavigne RBI single.
Both teams scored twice in the first of game two;
Cole Patterson hit an RBI double and Alfonso drove him in with a single, but the Penmen bounced back and then took a 3-2 lead on a Joel Valera single. Alfonso smacked a three-run shot to put AIC ahead, but again Southern New Hampshire regained the edge, scoring nine times to seemingly put the game out of reach.
AIC was undaunted and fought back to tie the game.
Leandro Guevara crushed a two-run shot in the fourth, then hit an RBI single in the sixth.
Nate Suncar and
Yeudy Ramirez followed with two-run singles and suddenly the score was 12-12. Unfortunately, the Penmen scored the final run, walking off again on a JR Bozek single in the eighth to win.
Alex Dye opened the Monday pair with a bang, smashing a three-run shot to right-center to score Alfonso and
Cole Patterson, but the Penmen countered with eight in the home half and six more in the second, running up eventually to a 26-3 win.
In the finale, Patterson started the scoring with an RBI double. The Penmen grabbed two in the first to lead, but AIC scored five times in the second, beginning with a run scoring on a
Sam Tanous sacrifice bunt that followed with a throwing error. Ramirez and Patterson each drove in runs with singles before Alfonso doubled two more home for a 6-2 AIC lead.
It was all Penmen from there, however, as the hosts notched three in the second and two in the third to regain the lead and then tacked on five in the fourth, six in the fifth, and one in the sixth for the 19-6 final.
AIC plays one at home against Southern Connecticut State University on Tuesday, March 31 at 3:30 p.m.
