SPRINGFIELD, Massachusetts - The final score reads as lopsided, but the American International College baseball team was close for seven frames in an 11-1 Northeast 10 Conference loss to Southern Connecticut State University on Tuesday, March 31.
AIC falls to 10-15 overall and 6-7 in the NE10.
The Owls used a one-out triple by Alex Cappellucci to score the first run of the day, with Devin Pelletier driving him in; Brennan Staubley then hit a ball over the center-field fence in the second for a 2-0 lead, and Bam Talavera followed with a solo shot in the fourth to make it 3-0 Owls.
In the sixth,
Yeudy Ramirez led off with a single, and though he was erased on a groundout to second,
Cole Patterson beat the throw to first to prevent the double play. He then advanced on another groundout, and scored on a
Wesley Alfonso single to right field.
In the eighth, however, the Owls put the game out of reach. Staubley started the scoring with his second home run of the day, a two-run shot to left, and the visiting squad collected six hits and four free passes in an eight-run frame for the 11-1 final.
AIC returns to action in Colchester, Vermont on Friday, April 3 for a doubleheader at Saint Michael's College. First pitch of game one is slated for noon.
