SPRINGFIELD, Massachusetts -
Seven Gillingham,
Jordan Boyenko, and
Jacob Ligor each notched hat tricks and more, but the American International College men's lacrosse team fell 24-12 to Assumption University in Northeast 10 Conference play on Saturday, March 21.
AIC is now 1-6 with an 0-2 NE10 mark.
The Greyhounds scored twice in the first 2:35, but the big three for AIC all clicked in a 2:34 span of their own; Boyenko started things for the Yellow Jackets on a feed from Gillingham at 5:10; Ligor then hammered a shot in at 6:49, and Gillingham put AIC up with a solo effort at 7:44.
Assumption answered back, tying the game at 9:31 and then taking the lead at 13:13; they then hit the net three times in the first 2:04 of the second for a 7-3 advantage.Â
The Yellow Jackets again leaned on their power trip, with Boyenko finding Gillingham open just 18 seconds after the last Greyhounds goal; just 48 seconds after that, Ligor popped the twine again, and the game was 7-5.
Assumption notched three straight again, and though Boyenko fed Gillingham again for the last goal of the half at 14:08, AIC trailed 10-6 at the break.
The Greyhounds began to pull away in the third, scoring six goals to AIC's three; Ligor assisted Boyenko at 3:39 before finding Camden Macdonald for a tally at 9:39 and then completing his hat trick at 13:38, but AIC found itself down 16-9 after three.
AIC was not able to come back in the fourth; Gillingham and Boyenko each had three points, with the former scoring first on a feed from the latter before the duo reversed the order for the team's final two goals of the game, but a six-goal run helped provide the final margin for the Greyhounds.
On the defensive side,
Dameer Phifer picked up eight ground balls and won three caused turnovers;
Riley McGraw snagged seven and forced a pair of takeaways.
Aiden Moscarello won 18 faceoffs and grabbed seven grounders as well.
Nicholas Kendall made 15 saves in the setback.
AIC will break from NE10 play to face the University of Bridgeport on Wednesday, March 25 at 4:00 p.m.
