SPRINGFIELD, Massachusetts - The American International College men's lacrosse team cut a six-goal deficit down to two, but ultimately fell 14-6 to Post University on Wednesday, February 18.
AIC is now 1-2 on the season.
The Eagles were all over AIC in the first, taking a 5-0 lead into the intermission. That expanded to 6-0 before AIC found the net, with
Matt Smith finishing a
Seven Gillingham feed on the extra-man opportunity for his third of the season. The teams then traded tallies, with Camden Macdonald setting up
Jordan Boyenko for his 10th of the season before the half expired, leaving AIC down 7-2 at the break.
Post threatened to pull away with the first tally of the second half, but AIC came roaring back, scoring four times in a row. Boyenko tallied his 11th on a one-handed over-the-shoulder solo effort, Gillingham picked up his fourth of the season on a nice drive in,
Jacob Ligor scored his third of the year, and
Maxx Smith tallied his first collegiate goal. Suddenly, AIC was right there, trailing 8-6 after three.
Unfortunately, a goal right off the opening faceoff of the fourth set the tone for the Eagles, who scored five more times in the final period to take the game.
Dameer Phifer snagged eight ground balls in the game, giving him 14 on the season.
Nick Kendall stopped 14 saves in the setback; his 41 saves on the season leads the Northeast 10 Conference.
AIC returns to Abdow Field on Saturday, February 21 at 7:00 p.m. against Felician University.
