RINDGE, New Hampshire - Under siege all night, rookie
Hedda Haukland gave the American International College women's soccer team a chance in an eventual 1-0 setback at No. 6 Franklin Pierce University in Northeast 10 Conference play on Saturday, October 17.
AIC is now 7-6-1 with a 3-3-0 NE10 record.
The Yellow Jackets were outshot 5-0 in the first half, and the lone goal of the game came in the 23rd minute, as Isabella Hernandez struck at 22:38.Â
Franklin Pierce's attack only grew in the second half, as the Ravens fired eight shots on goal, but Haukland held them all off, giving AIC hope that the team could find a bounce and net an equalizer.
In the 79th minute, AIC had that chance. Off of a mishit clearance,
Karoline Eriksen received a pass at the top left of the 18-yard box, and a Ravens defender tripped her. AIC was awarded a penalty kick. However, Jess LaCroix made the save, diving to her left and punching the chance away.
That turned out to be the last shot AIC earned in the game, and the Ravens hung on from there for the win.
Haukland made a career-best 12 saves in the setback; her previous high was 10 in a win over Daemen University on September 22. She has allowed one or fewer goals in nine of her 11 appearances, and ranks second in the NE10 with a .871 save percentage.Â
AIC returns to action Tuesday, October 20 at 4:00 p.m. at Assumption University.
