Women's Soccer overcomes early deficit to down Holy Family

PHILADELPHIA, Pennsylvania – The American International College women's soccer team earned its first win of the season against Holy Family University on Saturday, September 13.

The Yellow Jackets are now 1-2 on the season.

The Tigers scored first just 13 minutes into play off a header from Bridget Dickson on a free kick by Rylee Kauffmann.

With just six minutes left in the first half, Elena Nunez stepped out the defensive line and sent freshman Caroline Skov Johansson past the defenders. Johanson found the back of the net for the equalizer against the Tigers and her first goal of her college career in the 39th minute.

AIC and HFU ended the first half with a 1-1 draw.

In the 54th minute, Liz Braz wound up for corner, finding the head of Alyssa Stetson. The captain was able to get the ball in the net, putting AIC up 2-1 with plenty of time remaining.

The momentum continued in favor for AIC, as twenty minutes later, defender Savannah Kamperides sent captain Lily Shields a long ball into the Tigers defensive zone. The senior won the ball against three Holy Family players and took them all on by herself. She beat the defender, getting some space, and drove the ball to the top left corner in the 77th minute. Shields gave the Yellow Jackets a safety net, putting them up 3-1.

AIC finished the game with seventeen shots, while Sara Avery had five saves.

The team's next game is on Saturday, September 20 at Abdow Field. The first home game for the squad kicks off at 12:00 p.m. against the reigning Northeast 10 Conference champs, Franklin Pierce University.
