Women's Volleyball falls just short in NE10 Championship

WALTHAM, Massachusetts - The American International College women's volleyball team came two sets shy of repeating as Northeast 10 Conference champions, dropping a 25-16, 21-25, 23-25, 21-25 result to Bentley University in the NE10 Championship Final on Saturday, November 22.

AIC is now 18-7 on the season.

Behind an incredible offensive showing, AIC ran off with the first set. Janelys Perez Cortes swatted down six kills on eight swings, while Carissa Michel went for five on seven and the Yellow Jackets hit .389 as a team, compiling 20 total kills against just six errors on the attack.

The Falcons adjusted from there, however, and were able to slow AIC down. Despite Paola Soto Burgos hitting .333 in the second with six kills to one error, the Yellow Jackets offense sputtered to a .156 attack percentage, and Bentley was able to tie the match as Sophia Poehlein had seven of Bentley's 12 kills in the frame.

Soto Burgos and Perez Cortes continued to put up points, and Perla Rosa impressed with nine digs and seven receptions in the third, but the Falcons blocking began to take its toll. Elena Coban had a hand in all four Bentley blocks in the set, and the hosts just edged out AIC to take a 2-1 lead.

The netfront presence once again made the difference in the forth, as AIC was held to just .089 hitting because of five blocks by Elizabeth Blinn, and four Coban kills helped seal the Bentley victory.

Perez Cortes was named to the All-Tournament team thanks in part to her 36 kills and eight aces; she averaged 4.65 points per set. Soto Burgos led AIC with 37 kills, while Rosa notched an astonishing 65 digs and 51 receptions in the three matches.

AIC now awaits the NCAA Selection Show to see where it will be placed heading into the NCAA East Region Championship.
