SPRINGFIELD, Massachusetts - The American International College women's rugby team will have a chance to defend its crown following a 107-0 win over No. 4 Frostburg State University in the National Intercollegiate Rugby Association Division II Semifinal on Saturday, November 15.
AIC is now 6-1, including a 5-0 mark against NIRA Division II opposition.
From the start, AIC controlled the game.
Naomi Dodd opened the scoring barely half a minute in, taking an offload from
Kiyanah Edwards along the right side and splitting the defense before cutting back to the middle for the game's first try. Barely two minutes later, AIC worked the ball wide to the left side and
SaTya Miller flew past the Bobcats for a score.
Camryn Henderson converted both, giving AIC a 14-0 lead before the three-minute mark.
From there, AIC rolled.
Annekkia Ritter-Truxal poached the ball in the Frostburg try zone early in the 10th minute, and Dodd added another score 90 seconds later.
Jendell Moe then put the forwards onto the scoresheet, taking a ball out of a ruck and driving through, rather than past, the Bobcats defense. Henderson nailed all three conversions for a 35-0 lead barely a quarter-hour in.
Down the stretch of the half, AIC continued to add to the tally. Miller notched two more scores for a first-half hat trick, and both
Luna Bussing and Henderson herself also put the ball down in the try zone. Henderson also scored three kicks out of four, giving her 21 points in the half and AIC a 61-0 lead at the break.
Edwards then started the second half with a bang, stealing the opening kickoff and scoring 13 seconds in. Ritter-Truxal tacked on her second of the game shortly after for a 73-0 lead.Â
Several reserves added their names to the scoresheet after coming on at halftime.
Victoria White,
Brooklyn Duke, and
Talimaia Fuala'au each scored, before AIC's fly half,
Morgan Schechter, notched a pair of tries, the latter of which she scored on a breakaway after running onto a Ritter-Truxal kick to put AIC at an even 100.
Bussing closed the scoring out by converting that try and scoring the final one of the contest with 7:48 to play for the 107-0 final.
AIC will play third-seeded West Chester University in the NIRA Division II National Championship Game following the Golden Rams win over Bowdoin College, 19-5, in the other Semifinal contest. That match will be played at Harvard University on Saturday, November 22, with a kickoff time to be determined.
