RINDGE, New Hampshire - The American International College women's volleyball team took care of business, taking a Northeast-10 Conference road match at Franklin Pierce University 25-19, 25-18, 25-12 on Tuesday, October 8.
AIC is now 6-6 overall and 2-0 in the NE10.
Aleksandra Lucic led an early five-point run with a pair of aces and played fairly consistently from there, minimizing the opportunities for the hosts to close the gap and scoring six of seven late, with a pair of Gabryela Castro de Jesus shots landing in the stretch, before Carissa Michel took a pass from Victoria Mendez and sent it to the wood for set point.
AIC opened the second set with four straight points, and another run shortly after that featured two Alice di Francesco aces put AIC ahead 9-2, but the home side closed the gap and tied the set at 12-12. The Yellow Jackets never let the Ravens take a lead, however, and began pulling away again with back-to-back kills by Michel. Franklin Pierce cut it back to 19-18, but seemed to run out of gas as the Ravens made five attack errors and a block error to give AIC the set.
With the win in sight, AIC made sure to finish the job. Jelena Milovanovic started a five-point run with back-to-back kills to put AIC ahead 16-7, and two more Lucic aces down the stretch put the win within reach. Ultimately, a service error by the Ravens ended the match in AIC's favor.
Mendez had a strong night all around, with 12 kills and a .526 attack percentage to go with 13 assists, two aces, and two blocks. Lucic compiled six aces and six digs, while Michel scored eight kills and Di Francesco dished out 14 assists and hit three aces of her own. Perla Rosa led AIC with 11 digs.
AIC breaks from NE10 play to host Roberts Wesleyan University on Friday, October 11 at 3:00 p.m. before a 7:00 p.m. Northeast-10 Conference match on Saturday, October 12 at home against Saint Michael's College.
