Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Women's Volleyball keeps streak going against Roberts Wesleyan, Saint Michael's

SPRINGFIELD, Massachusetts - The American International College women's volleyball team increased its win streak to seven matches by sinking Roberts Wesleyan University 25-10, 25-21, 25-17 on Friday, October 11 and then defeating Saint Michael's College in Northeast-10 Conference play 26-24, 25-12, 25-17 on Saturday, October 12.

AIC is now 8-6 overall, and 3-0 in the NE10.

The Yellow Jackets made quick work of the Redhawks in the weekend's first set, hitting .500 and having multiple runs of four or more consecutive points, finishing with a flourish as Kiya Yeoman slammed an Alice Di Francesco pass to the wood for set point.

In the second, Roberts Wesleyan limited AIC's streaks more effectively, but the Yellow Jackets defense did its job in preventing runs from the Redhawks, and a service error on set point gave the Yellow Jackets a 2-0 lead.

Strong blocking was the order of the day in the third, keying a mid-set run of five points as Aleksandra Lucic rejected multiple opposition attacks. The visitors did put together their lone five-point run of the match, but it was far too late, and Chelsea Foulis's back-row swing was the dagger in the third-set victory.

Yeoman collected 10 kills with no errors and four blocks in the nonconference win, while Victoria Mendez dished 16 assists with 12 digs and six kills.

The Purple Knights, making the trip to Springfield for the second time on the season, aimed to avenge the first meeting, a 3-0 AIC win. They overcame a four-point deficit to take a 24-23 lead and force an AIC timeout, but Lucic stuffed the set point attack, and then an error followed by a Carissa Michel kill turned the set to AIC.

With momentum now in their favor, the Yellow Jackets pounced, scoring 11 of 12 points midway through on a run that the only Saint Michael's point was a service error. AIC aced 10 serves and only needed six kills to win the set, which ended on two combo blocks by Yeoman and Foulis followed by a Yuleishka Alvelo Melendez ace.

AIC went on a run early in the third to gain a 12-4 advantage in what proved to be the final set of the weekend. The Yellow Jackets kept the visiting squad at bay, and a service error finished off the match in AIC's favor.

Lucic led AIC with seven kills, while Yeoman made seven blocks in the conference win. Perla Rosa made 14 digs in the victory.

AIC continues NE10 play on Tuesday, October 15 at Southern New Hampshire University. First serve is 7:00 p.m.
