Women's soccer battles Greyhounds to draw

SPRINGFIELD, Massachusetts – The American International College women's soccer team tied in a back-and-forth battle with Assumption University in a nonconference matchup at Abdow Field on Friday, September 2.

AIC is now 1-0-1 on the season.

The Yellow Jackets struck first prior to the quarter-hour mark of the game. Wilma Jansson pushed a perfect through ball from the right side to Trystin Burger, who beat the defense to get free at the top of the six-yard box. Julia Walsh slid out and stopped her bid, but the rebound deflected to Caroline Porter on the left side of the box, and she finished the job at 11:30 with her first of the campaign.

AIC's lead lasted until the waning stages of the first half. Assumption had applied some pressure, and a turnover to Kate Carleson allowed her to step into the top of the 18-yard box and fire home her second of the season at 38:22 to tie the game.

The Greyhounds kept up the pressure after the break, and took the lead quickly. Carleson broke free up the right side and took the ball deep before crossing a pass along the ground to Haley Brown at the left corner of the six-yard box, and she put home her first of the season at 5:41 of the half.

The Yellow Jackets responded to Assumption's goal strongly, putting pressure on the Greyhounds and keeping the ball deep in their territory for the minutes following the go-ahead goal. Ultimately the team drew a corner kick, and Burger's send into the box bounced around to Jansson on the left side of the six. She smartly crossed to Charlotte Bernard, who was waiting on the right post for a tap-in at 11:02; it was her first goal of the season.

Both teams had quality chances after the tying strike, only to be turned back by the keepers. AIC drew a free kick just outside of the box that Jocelyn Trajkovski was denied on by a diving Walsh with 17:10 left in regulation, and with about 8:10 to play, Olivia Sousa made a pair of strong stops on a scramble in front of her net, keeping the score 2-2, which was the final.

AIC next visits Caldwell on Wednesday, September 7 at 3:00 p.m.
