SPRINGFIELD, Massachusetts – The American International College women's volleyball team celebrated its seniors by playing the seven for a full contest, a 25-17, 25-16, 25-18 sweep of Saint Michael's College in Northeast-10 Conference play on Saturday, October 29.
AIC improves to 25-2 overall and 10-1 in the NE10 with the win.
The first set was even until the midpoint when AIC took over. From 13-13 to the end, AIC outscored the Purple Knights 12-4, starting with a pair of Andjela Bublic kills and led by three kills and an ace from Andrea Serra Rosa, with the ace coming on set point.
In the second, the Purple Knights jumped to a 4-0 lead, but AIC responded, taking the lead during a 5-0 run that included two Lyanne Hernandez aces. That was part of an overall run of 19-7 for the Yellow Jackets, and AIC closed out the set with a Serra Rosa kill and Mai-Lani Hernandez ace.
The third set was completely controlled by AIC. The team built an early 14-7 lead, allowing the Yellow Jackets to shrug off a four-point run and hold the guests at bay. Down the stretch, Serra Rosa, Bublic, and Hernandez continued to rack up kills, and the final point came fittingly on another ace, this time by Katie Bannon.
Every one of the seven players recorded at least one ace, with Serra Rosa and Lyanne Hernandez notching three. Naomi Eckert Rivera piled up 40 assists, while Serra Rosa led the way with 16 kills, and Bublic added 12. Janae Kelly recorded eight digs as the team's libero, and also posted a pair of aces.
AIC's last regular season game is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 5 at Assumption University.
