Women's volleyball upends Division I Hartford

SPRINGFIELD, Massachusetts – The American International College women's volleyball team completed a season series sweep of the University of Hartford, defeating the Hawks 25-15, 25-27, 25-15, 25-19 on Friday, October 28.

AIC is now 24-2 on the season.

The Yellow Jackets roared out to an early lead, using an early 6-0 run to get ahead 10-2. Another six-point run later in the set put it completely out of reach, and Paola Soto Burgos finished it with a kill.

The Hawks came out tougher in the second, and the battle was even through 19-19. AIC scored four of the next five points and seemed on the precipice of a 2-0 lead, but the Hawks scored the next four and seven of nine to steal the set, with three consecutive errors by the Yellow Jackets sealing the result.

Determined to bounce back, the Yellow Jackets won 11 straight rallies to take a 16-4 lead in the third, with Dora Butkovic scoring three of the kills during the run. The Hawks had no chance to recover from the deficit, and Butkovic, Mai-Lani Hernandez, and Andrea Serra Rosa each landed a kill to put the set away for the Yellow Jackets.

AIC kept rolling in the fourth, putting Hartford out of it early by taking eight of the first nine points. The Hawks could never close to within less than four, and AIC was able to limit the visiting squad to just one run of three during the final set, which ended with an Amber Williams kill.

Serra Rosa was AIC's star hitter, with 18 kills on 33 swings and a .424 attack percentage and recording 10 digs as well. Williams had seven kills on 12 swings to hit .583, along with a trio of blocks. Naomi Eckert Rivera dished out 35 assists and had four aces, and Butkovic totaled 10 kills.

The team returns to Northeast-10 Conference play on Saturday, October 29 at 5:00 p.m. when Saint Michael's College visits the Butova Gym. It will be senior day, and the team will celebrate Eckert Rivera, Janae Kelly, Lyanne Hernandez, Mai-Lani Hernandez, Katie Bannon, Andjela Bublic, and Serra Rosa.
