SPRINGFIELD, Massachusetts – The American International College women's volleyball team used an overpowering offensive showing to defeat Franklin Pierce University 25-19, 25-16, 25-11 in a Northeast-10 Conference matchup on Tuesday, October 25.
AIC is now 23-2 overall and 9-1 in NE10 play.
In a first set filled with miscues – 20 of the 44 points came on errors – AIC prevailed despite a late push where the Ravens took seven out of nine points. A combo block by Aleksandra Ivanovic and Naomi Eckert Rivera ended the Ravens rally, and Andrea Serra Rosa landed three kills, including set point, to put the opener in AIC's hands.
AIC truly began to assert dominance in the second set, with five blocks inside of the first ten Yellow Jackets points. The Ravens only mustered eight points the rest of the set as the Yellow Jackets ran away and took the second, with Serra Rosa again punctuating the set with the final kill.
AIC roared out to a 14-5 lead in the third, as the team continued to rise to the occasion, taking a raucous Butova Gym crowd with them. The Ravens barely reached double digits before the match was over, with Alice Di Francesco scoring the final kill to secure the sweep following a set where the team swung .520.
Serra Rosa was strong in the match, scoring 15 kills and hitting .400. Amber Williams contributed two kills and four blocks, while Ivanovic had three blocks and five kills. Eckert Rivera posted 32 assists, seven digs, and four blocks.
Prior to the match, the team honored Assistant Coach Tyler Wingate, who had been inducted into the Massachusetts Volleyball Coaches Association (MAVCA) Hall of Fame the weekend prior.
The team will play its last nonconference regular season game on Friday, October 28 when the University of Hartford visits the Butova Gymnasium for a 7:00 p.m. match.
