Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Win streak hits 16 as women's volleyball dispatches Owls

NEW HAVEN, Connecticut – Behind the strength of a pair of .400 attack percentage nights out of Paola Soto Burgos and Andrea Serra Rosa, the American International College women's volleyball team swept Southern Connecticut State University 25-15, 26-24, 25-19 in Northeast-10 Conference play on Friday, October 14.

AIC is now 19-1 on the season and 6-0 in the NE10.

The first set made the match look as if it would be a rout. AIC swung .423 in the set and went on a 13-4 run in the middle of the frame to put it out of reach after the Owls had kept it to 9-7 early on. Mai-Lani Hernandez's kill at the end sealed the set.

The second was much more of a struggle. Although AIC led 6-4 early, the Owls bounced back, getting ahead by as much as five at 19-14. The Yellow Jackets were behind 23-20 before scoring three straight to tie it, and after a service error gave the Owls set point, Kristina Peric notched a kill to force the set beyond 25. Soto Burgos then put the ball down on Southern Connecticut's side twice to take the set.

The Yellow Jackets never looked back from there, pushing out to a 13-6 lead early on in the third and caging the Owls offense. Lyanne Hernandez scored the penultimate kills for AIC before Soto Burgos ended the match.

Her 13 kills were a match-best; Serra Rosa added in 10 as well as a pair of blocks and six digs. Naomi Eckert Rivera posted 30 assists and 17 digs in the three sets, while Perla Rosa had nine assists and eight digs. Hernandez added four kills and three blocks, as did Amber Williams.

AIC has won 16 matches in a row, the second-longest streak in program history behind only the 22-match win streak from a season ago. Altogether, the Yellow Jackets have won 40 of their last 42 matches.

The Yellow Jackets will break from NE10 play to face Division I University of Hartford at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 15.
