SPRINGFIELD, Massachusetts – The American International College women's volleyball team swept Bentley University, winning 25-21, 25-17, 25-21 to remain the last team in the Northeast-10 Conference without an in-league defeat this season.
AIC improves to 18-1 overall and 5-0 in the NE10.
As was expected, the teams were even deep into the first set. Tied at 17-17, AIC went on a 4-0 run, drawing both Bentley timeouts as Mai-Lani Hernandez both opened and closed the run with kills. The Falcons were able to use the stoppage to go on a three-point run, forcing AIC to use a timeout. Andrea Serra Rosa promptly landed a kill, and Naomi Eckert Rivera followed. Bentley's Ingrid Murphy bounced back with a kill, but her next serve went long, and Amber Williams finished the set with a shot from the middle.
With the momentum from the first-set win, AIC stormed to a 15-4 lead in the second. Four blocks were a significant portion of the scoring, as were three kills by Paola Sotoa Burgos. The Falcons tried to come back, but the lead was insurmountable, especially with a pair of service errors late, and Kristina Peric's ace put it away.
The third set seemed to be destined to go the same way as the second, with AIC quickly rising to a 12-5 lead. The Falcons had a rally in them, however, scoring five straight points on two occasions, tying the match at 15-15 and ultimately taking a 20-18 lead. At that point, Matt Cribbin called his timeout, and AIC turned it on. AIC outscored Bentley 7-1 from then on, with four kills by Hernandez sealing AIC's sweep of its conference rivals.
In total, Hernandez hit .500, with eight kills against one error on 14 swings, and also added three blocks. Her fellow middle, Williams, had seven kills with no errors on nine attacks with two blocks.
AIC returns to action Friday, October 14 at 7:00 p.m. at Southern Connecticut State University.
