HOW IT HAPPENED:
Game 1:
- Things did not start well for the Yellow Jackets. The Panthers scored three runs on two home runs and a walk in the first three batters. They added two runs in the top of the second to take the early 6-0 lead.
- In the bottom of the inning, the Yellow Jackets started to chip away at their deficit. Senior Matt Costanza had the first AIC hit of the day, a one-out single to right. Junior Cam Defeo singled to right on the next at-bat. Redshirt-junior Dalton Quinn singled up the middle and Costanza came around to score.
- After an Adelphi solo home run in the top of the third, AIC continued to cut the deficit. Seniors Angel Gonzalez and Matt Krause were at first and second when junior Alejandro Mosquera singled through the left side to load the bases. Senior Anthony Clark ripped a single through the right side which allowed Mendez to score. Costanza singled to the right and Krause made it a 7-3 game.
- The momentum officially swung in the top of the sixth. With two outs sophomore, Michael Cruz singled up the middle and advanced to second on a wild throw to first by the shortstop. Mendez sent a dribbler down the first baseline. The Adelphi pitcher and catcher miscommunicated. The catcher rushed the throw and it went into right field which allowed Cruz to score.
- After a single by junior Brandon Gaul, the Panthers changed pitchers. The bleeding didn't stop as Krause doubled to center and Gaul scored. Mosquera tied the game as he drove in Krause with an RBI single.
- In the bottom of the eighth, Mendez led the inning off by reaching on a throwing error by the third baseman. With two strikes, Gaul laid a beautiful bunt down the left-field line to move Mendez over. Krause followed with a single to right. The right fielder threw home to keep Mendez at third. On the throw, Costanza scampered to second. With one out, Mosquera singled through the right side to put the Yellow Jackets up 8-7.
- With one out in the top of the ninth, the Yellow Jackets pulled redshirt senior James Flahive, who would earn the win, in favor of junior Mason St. Pierre to record the save.
Game 2:
- The Panthers scored a run on a one-out double to right to take the early lead.
- The Yellow Jackets answered in their half of the inning. Krause hit a one-out double to left and scored on a Mosquera single.
- In the top of the fourth, Ryan went deep to break the tie and give the Panthers the 3-1 lead. Becker added a solo home run in the top of the fifth to extend their lead.
- The AIC bats came alive on the bottom of the sixth inning. Costanza reached on a fielding error by the shortstop to lead things off. He took second and third on back-to-back wild pitches to get within 90-feet of scoring. Leifert sent a flyball to center that was deep enough for Costanza to tag.
- That was as close as the Yellow got as the Panthers hit back-to-back solo shots in the top of the seventh to take the game 6-2.
