HOW IT HAPPENED:
Game 1:
  • Senior Angel Mendez led the game off by drawing a hit-by-pitch. Mendez stole second before advancing to third on a passed ball. Classmate Anthony Clark walked and gave the Yellow Jackets runners on the corners. Mendez and Clark each advanced a base on a balk by the Owls pitcher. Senior Matt Costanza walked with the fourth ball that went wild and allowed Clark to scamper to third. The Owls starting pitcher balked a run in for the second time in the inning and gave AIC the 2-0 lead.
  • The Owls had a lead-off double by Zambito who scored on a hit by Sullivan to cut their deficit in half after one inning.
  • Senior Matt Krause led the top of the third inning off by taking a pitch off the body. During the at-bat by junior Alejandro Mosquera, Krause stole second and took third as the throw went into centerfield. During the same at-bat, Krause scored on a wild pitch. With one out, Costanza hit into a fielder's choice as Mosquera was put out at second base. Constanza stole second before junior Brandon Gaul singled to left which brought up junior Cam Defeo. Defeo pushed a single through the right side which allowed Costanza to score and make it a 4-1 game.
  • The Owls added a run in the top of the fifth, but it was in the bottom of the seventh where they did more damage. The Owls scored three runs on two hits and one error to take the 5-4 lead.
  • AIC answered in the top of the eighth. Sophomore Michael Cruz was hit by a pitch with two outs. Mendez dug in and doubled to right as the speedy Cruz rallied around third and scored. With one on and two outs, Krause sent a long shot down the right-field line that got over the fence and was called a home run. After the umpires huddled, they reversed the call and said the ball was foul. Krause walked on the next pitch that escaped the pitcher's hand and Mendez took third.
  • With runners on the corners, Krause drew a pick-off attempt and was stuck in no-man land. After a throw to second base, Mendez started to break home but quickly headed back as the Owls threw to third. On the throw, Krause headed towards second and drew a throw. On the throw, Mendez was off for home and beat the throw to give the Yellow Jackets the 6-5 lead.
  • As the game headed into the bottom of the ninth, senior James Flahive made the first hitter ground out. The second hitter doubled to right-center and gave the Owls the tying run 180 feet away. Flahive stayed calm and forced a popup and a ground out to give AIC the 6-5 victory.
Game 2:
  • Southern Connecticut jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second with a ground out with a runner on third.
  • In the top of the fourth, the Yellow Jackets answered in a big way. Mendez led the inning with a single to third and proceeded to steal second during the Krause at-bat. Mosquera singled to center and Mendez tied the game. Gaul walked and Costanza singled to load the bases. Redshirt-junior Dalton Quinn stepped up to the plate with two outs and went deep over the left-field fence for the grand slam.
  • The Yellow Jackets kept rolling in the top of the next frame. Cruz started with a walk. Mendez moved him over with a sacrifice bunt Cruz came around to score when Matt Krause singled to short.
  • AIC broke the game open in the top of the sixth. The team sent 13 hitters to the plate and scored eight runs on seven hits and one error while leaving two on base. The Yellow Jackets added another run in the top of the seventh to take the game 15-1.
