Baseball takes 3 of 4 at SCSU

SPRINGFIELD, Massachusetts The American International College baseball team won the four-game weekend series with Southern Connecticut State University on Sunday, April 18 by taking game three 4-2. The Owls bounced back to avoid the sweep as they took game four 3-1.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
Game 1:
  • With one out in the first inning, senior Matt Costanza reached on a throwing error by the third baseman. Classmate Matt Krause singled up the middle before both advanced a base on a wild pitch. Junior Brandon Gaul hit a fly ball to right that was deep enough for Costanza to score and Krause to scamper to third. Junior Cam Defeo walked and stole second before redshirt-junior Dalton Quinn hit a two RBI single to left.
  • The added a run in the bottom frame. With after a lead-off double followed by a single, Eng hit into a fielder's choice which allowed the lead-off hitter to score.
  • Leading 3-2 in the top of the fourth, sophomore Chad Lavelle went deep to center on a 0-1 count to make it 4-2 game.
Game 2:
  • The Yellow Jackets were on the board first in the the second game. Costanza hit a two-out singled to right field. Two pitches later Krause doubled to right field and Costanza found himself 90-feet from scoring. Clark stepped up to the dish and singled to left field. Costanza scored from third while Krause was thrown out at the plate to end the inning.
  • Southern Connecticut took advantage of a lead-off triple in the bottom of the third to tie the game at one.
  • In the top of the seventh the Owls added a pair of runs on a hit and two errors to take the 3-1 lead.

NEXT UP:
  • The Yellow Jackets retrun home to host Le Moyne College on Wednesday, April 21 at 1 p.m. and 4:30 p.m.
