Second-half surge pushes women's soccer past Bridgeport

BRIDGEPORT, Connecticut The American International College women's soccer team overcame a 1-0 deficit at halftime to defeat the University of Bridgeport 3-1 in a nonconference matchup on Wednesday, April 14.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The first half looked as though it would end scoreless thanks to solid work by both defenses, until Bridgeport broke through with a pass up the middle from that allowed Samantha St. Pierre to walk into the box in possession; she was able to make a move to beat sophomore goalkeeper Olivia Sousa to put the hosts ahead 1-0 less than four minutes before the break.
  • AIC came out firing in the second half and tied the game quickly; a ball into the box from the left side bounced to rookie Reese Carey near the right post and she was able to find sophomore Trystin Burger loose in the six for the tying goal in the 52nd minute.
  • Less than six minutes later, AIC took the lead on a steal by sophomore Nicole Gamberoni, who dropped the ball back to freshman Morgan Soares. Soares in turn fed a through ball to her classmate Nina Gamelli, who ripped a shot from the 18-yard line into the left corner of the net.
  • In the 73rd minute, AIC was able to capitalize on a bad pass by Bridgeport that was picked off by freshman Emma LeBlanc in the midfield; the rookie turned and sent senior Josefine Stendahl in on a breakaway and the veteran forward made no mistake with her shot to land the insurance goal that proved to be the final tally in the 3-1 win.
