Serra, Butkovic lift women's volleyball past Franklin Pierce

RINDGE, New Hampshire The American International College women's volleyball team hit the road for the first time this season on take on Franklin Pierce University on Tuesday, March 23. The Yellow Jackets used a balanced attack to sweep the Ravens.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Ravens trailed 3-1 when they went on a 6-2 run to take the 7-5 lead. AIC brought it to 10-8 before went on an 8-1 run to jump ahead 15-11.
  • A pair of kills by freshman Dora Butkovic and a kill by junior Giulia Alves pushed the Yellow Jackets out to the 19-13 lead and forced the Ravens to take a timeout. The Ravens made another push and made it a 20-18 set.
  • Leading 21-21, a kill by junior Andrea Serra, an error by Franklin Pierce and back-to-back aces by sophomore Janae Kelly gave the Yellow Jackets the set 25-20.
  • AIC trailed 2-0 early in the second before the Yellow Jackets forced multiple Ravens errors and junior Naomi Eckert nailed an ace to take the 4-2 lead. The Yellow Jackets had a 15-10 lead when the Ravens went on a 6-0 run to take the one-point lead. AIC answered with three points of their own before Franklin Pierce did the same.
  • The Yellow Jackets started to pull away with a service error by the Ravens, a block by Eckert and sophomore Mai-Lani Hernandez, and a kill and ace by Butkovic, Franklin Pierce made it a 24-22 game before Eckert dumped the ball over for the final point of the set.
  • The Yellow Jackets continued to roll in the third set as they jumped out to a 6-0 run before jumping ahead 9-3. The Ravens knew they had to claw back into the game as they went on a 5-0 run to bring it within one before tying it at 10.
  • Deja-vu set in for the Ravens as the set was tied at 11. Serra rallied off three straight kills off passes from Eckert to help the Yellow Jackets regain the lead.
  • The Ravens were persistent late in the match. They trailed 23-19 before taking the next three points to put pressure on the Yellow Jackets. Serra tallied another kill but then committed a service error. On the next play Butkovic set home a pass from Eckert to complete the sweep.
