HOW IT HAPPENED:
Game 1:
- In the first inning, with senior Matt Krause on first, classmate Matt Costanza singled to left and advanced to second on an error by the left fielder. Krause took third on the error. With senior Anthony Clark at the dish, the catcher allowed a passed ball which allowed Krause to score and Costanza to move to third. Costanza then scored on a wild pitch to extend the lead to 2-0.
- In the bottom of the first, with runners on first and second, the Hawks put the ball into play and forced an error by senior third basemen Angel Mendez which allowed the runner from second to score. During the next at-bat, senior Joe Kemlage committed a balk, which allowed the runner from third to score. With one out and a runner on third, the Hawks doubled to center and took the 3-2 lead.
- Saint Anselm added a run in the bottom of the third off of two AIC errors.
- The Yellow Jackets tried to make a push in the final inning of the seven-inning game. With one out, Mendez sent a rope into left center and stopped at second. He advanced to third on a passed ball during the Krause at-bat, who ended up grounding out to third. The Hawks slammed the door on the Yellow Jackets with a line out to close the game.
Game 2:
- The Yellow Jackets came out aggressive in the first inning. Mendez led things off with a single through the right side as the leadoff hitter. During the next at-bat he stole second and was in scoring position. He moved to third on a groundout by Costanza, but the Yellow Jackets ultimately stranded the bases loaded.
- In the third inning, Mendez walked and stole second base before being picked off. However, with the bases loaded later in the inning, junior Brandon Gaul singled to left field and drove in Clark and Costanza.
- In the bottom of the third, Saint Anslem's Mike Borrelli hit a leadoff home run to left field to cut his team's deficit in half.
- In the bottom of the fourth, the Hawks tied the game before taking the 3-2 lead on a home run by Dan Baker to left field. Chris Schworer went deep on the next pitch to give Saint Anselm the two-run lead.
- After a pitching change by the Hawks, freshman Alejandro Mosquera led off with a walk and took second on a wild pitch. He moved to third when sophomore pinch hitter Kyle Leifert grounded out to short and then scored on a wild pitch during the Mendez at-bat to make it 4-3.
- The bats came even more alive in the top of the seventh. It started with a leadoff single by Clark and was followed by a walk by junior Cam Defeo. Gaul sacrificed himself with a bunt to move the runner over. Clark came around to score on a single by sophomore Michael Cruz which forced a pitching change.
- The streak continued as redshirt junior Dalton Quinn singled up the middle. Leifert followed that with a two RBI single through the left side. Rounding out the scoring in the inning was a sacrifice fly to first by Mendez. AIC led 7-4 after six and a half innings.
