MANCHESTER, New Hampshire - The American International College men's soccer team earned a 1-0 Northeast-10 Conference win against Saint Anselm College on Saturday, October 2 on the strength of a second-half goal by freshman Carl Larsson.

Location: Melucci Field, Manchester, New Hampshire

KEY STATS:
Saint Anselm:
Brian Underhill: Loss (4-4-0), two saves

No. 22 AIC:
Carl Larsson: One goal
Niklas Stalzer: One assist
Jordi Brinkman: One assist
Lucas Morales-Fernandez: Win (7-0-1), shutout (4), three saves

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The Hawks generated the game's first two shots on target, with bids by Zach Elliot and Jackson Bukunt turned back by rookie goalkeeper Lucas Morales-Fernandez before the 20-minute mark.
  • The shot disparity in the half Saint Anselm held a 3-1 shots-on-goal edge through 45 minutes belied the possession disparity in AIC's favor; the Yellow Jackets drew four corners in the frame, although the only chance generated, an attempt by graduate student Josip Validzic in the 29th minute, was denied.
  • In the second, AIC cashed in on a tremendous passing play. Rookie back Jordi Brinkman fired a pass from the left side of midfield up to classmate Niklas Stalzer. The forward simply redirected the ball into the right corner of the box, where Larsson ran onto it, and after a single stride, unleashed a shot into the low left corner for his second of the year at 63:13.
  • The Hawks pushed late, drawing two corner kicks in the final two minutes, but AIC's defenses did not allow anything to come of it, and the team held on for the 1-0 win.

PLAYOFFS? DON'T TALK ABOUT PLAYOFFS!:

  • With the win, AIC already has 15 points in Northeast-10 Conference action with seven league games to go.
  • In 2019, AIC was the eighth seed in the NE10 Championship Tournament, and had 17 standings points; 15 would have been enough to reach the postseason, as ninth-place Southern Connecticut State University had 14 points.
  • Only once in Luke Perry's tenure as AIC's head coach has 15 points not been enough to reach the postseason; AIC was the eighth seed in 2014 with 18 points at 6-7-0.

QUOTABLE:

  • Perry and his players all acknowledged both the skill of the Hawks and the challenge of playing in Manchester. Brinkman said after the game that "Despite the tough circumstances, we kept control and got the result we wanted: three points."
  • Larsson agreed with his classmate, saying "Difficult game today, but we fought hard and leave with three points and that's all that matters."
  • Echoing his team, Perry stated after the game that "Saint Anselm has been in great form this season. They have a good team, and it's a difficult field to play our game on. So, to come away with another victory is fantastic for the lads."

NEXT UP:

  • AIC will return home to aim for three more points against Saint Michel's College on Wednesday, October 6 at 3:00 p.m.
