HOW IT HAPPENED:
Match 1:

  • The Yellow Jackets opened with a 7-3 lead early in the opening set before taking a five-point lead at 17-12. The Golden Falcons made a push to bring it within two at 22-20, but rookie Paola Soto-Burgos recorded a kill while classmate Ulrika Blomgren added two to help the Yellow Jackets take the first set 25-21.
  • Trailing 12-10 in the second frame, rookie Amber Williams sandwiched a kill from junior Lyanne Hernandez with two of her own to give AIC the 13-12 lead.
  • Felician regained the 14-13 lead but newcomer Aleksandra Ivanovic started a rally with back-to-back kills. She and sophomore Naomi Eckert-Rivera then teamed up for a block which forced the Golden Falcons to take a timeout. Out of the break sophomore Janae Kelly aced her serve and Eckert-Rivera pulled out her bag of tricks and recorded a kill.
  • The points kept coming as Ivanovic and Hernandez blocked a Golden Falcon attack before the team forced an error to take the 21-14 lead. The seven-point lead was too much as graduate Andrea Serra-Rosa ended the set at 25-17 with a kill.
  • The cylinders kept moving as AIC sped off to an 11-4 lead in the third. Leading 17-13, AIC kept their foot on the pedal as they took the third set 25-17 to complete the sweep.

Match 2:

  • After dropping four of the first five points, the Yellow Jackets focused in and tied the match at four. Trailing 8-6, the Yellow Jackets used a service error by the Lions to take the lead. Blomgren served consecutive aces to which were followed by a pair of Lion errors that gave AIC the 11-8 lead.
  • Georgian Court roared back to jump ahead 15-12 before taking the first set 25-20.
  • Knotted at eight, Hernandez and Eckert-Rivera joined forces for a block that gave the Yellow Jackets energy. Serra-Rosa notched a pair of kills before an attack error by the home team forced them to take a timeout. After talking in the huddle junior Ada Guilera Martinez and Serra-Rosa had kills that gave AIC the 14-8 advantage.
  • The Lions made it a two-point game, 16-14, when AIC felt they were a little too close for comfort and called a timeout. The conversation helped as on the next play Williams and Guilera Martinez stuffed the Lions. Kills, a duo block, and an error by the Lions gave AIC the 20-14 lead, setting the team up to take the set 25-17.
  • The Yellow Jackets kept the momentum going as they took an early 10-4 lead. Georgian Court came back and made it 10-7. With five points until an AIC set victory, the Lions gave the Yellow Jackets a point on a service error. Kills from Serra-Rosa and Hernandez as well as a pair of errors from the Lions gave AIC the set 25-16.
  • The fourth set was back-and-forth. Tied at 21, the Lions missed their serve and gave AIC the advantage. The Yellow Jackets used that to their advantage as Serra-Rosa ended the next rally with a kill. Eckert-Rivera served an ace to give the Yellow Jackets match point. On the next play, Williams and Martinez said good night as they closed the match with a block.
