Women's volleyball sweep Mercy, wins eight straight

DOBBS FERRY, New York - The American International College women's volleyball extended their winning streak to eight with a sweep over Mercy College on Friday, October 15. With the sweep, the Yellow Jackets have taken 21 of their last 22 sets.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • AIC came out ready to go as they scored the first seven points of the game. Leading 8-3, the Yellow Jackets started a short run with a kill from junior Ada Guilera Martinez. She then served back-to-back aces before AIC forced a Maverick error. The Yellow Jackets took the set 25-15.
  • AIC led 5-4 the Yellow Jackets took three straight points starting with a kill from rookie Ulrika Blomgren. Sophomore Naomi Eckert-Rivera and freshman Aleksandra Ivanovic blocked a Maverick attack. Ivanovic then recorded a kill to make it 8-4. AIC led 24-18 when the Mavericks started to make a late rally. They made it 24-22 before graduate Andrea Serra-Rosa ended the set with a kill.
  • Trailing 4-2, sophomore Mai-Lani Hernandez started a run with a kill on a pass from Eckert-Rivera. Blomgren got in on the fun before Hernandez went back-to-back with kills before classmate Janae Kelly aced her serve. Up 14-13 Hernandez had not cooled down and she started a run that went 8-1 in the Yellow Jackets' favor. Serra-Rosa again end the set and this time the match by the score of 25-19.

NEXT UP:

  • The Yellow Jackets will continue the road trip as they have two matches on Saturday, October 16. They will play Felician University at noon before facing Georgian Court University at 2 p.m.
