LAST TIME OUT:
- AIC faced The College of Saint Rose on April 30, and junior Matt Costanza went nine brilliant innings on the bump to secure a 3-1 win over the Golden Knights at Bob Bellizzi Field.
- The Yellow Jackets did all of their scoring in the first thanks in part to sloppy defense by the hosts; seniors Brendan Carter and Josh Aviles both singled, with the latter reaching on a sacrifice bunt attempt. A walk and then an error at second brought home two runs, and senior Matthew Elliott drove in the third before the Golden Knights could even pick up their bats.
- Costanza scattered six hits over nine innings with one walk, fanning seven.
- Pace needed a win to lock up a playoff spot and got it, as Dan Wirchansky went 7.1 shutout innings and the Setters pounded out 17 hits in a 4-0 win over Southern Connecticut on Thursday, May 2.
- Michael Barbato, Brian Bohlander, and Noah Clement each had three hits in the win.
LAST TIME THEY MET:
- Pace took two of three from the Yellow Jackets last season at Richard F. Bedard Field on April 13-14, 2018; the Setters won the first game 9-3, and the teams split the next two, with Pace taking the first 9-0 and AIC winning the finale 4-1.
- Costanza went 5-for-11 at the dish in the series.
SCOUTING THE SETTERS:
- Salmonese is the top hitter in the NE10, coming into the series hitting .386, but he is far from alone; the Setters as a team hit .282, second only to Adelphi in the conference.
- Though the Setters have a high slugging percentage as a team, they do not hit many home runs, with a league-low 10 round-trip swings in 1394 at-bats.
- Pitching could be a concern for the Setters; Wirchansky is their ace, but he will be unavailable for this series after yesterday's start, as will Greg Najar after he pitched on May 1 against Caldwell. The Yellow Jackets will likely see Thomas Ippolito and Alex Busby, who are Pace's second and third starters, but the options are few after that among regular starters.
- Fatigue in general could be a factor for Pace; AIC has played just once in the last six days, while the Setters have played three games in three cities in the last three days. In particular, reliever Lorenzo Russo threw three innings against Adelphi on April 30 and another 1.2 frames against the Owls; he leads the team with 17 appearances and has a 2.06 ERA in 43.2 innings.
PLAYOFF PICTURE:
- Pace's win over Southern Connecticut simplified things for the Yellow Jackets, who need just one win in these three games to make the NE10 Championship Tournament. If the Yellow Jackets win once, they would then face Adelphi in the opening round of the postseason.
- AIC can jump Pace in the standings by taking two out of the three games; in that scenario, both teams would be 10-8 in divisional play, but AIC would hold the tiebreaker and be seeded third. In that scenario, AIC would open postseason play at Le Moyne.
- AIC could still finish second, but the Yellow Jackets would need to sweep the Setters and have Adelphi take both of its two remaining games at Le Moyne; if that were to happen, AIC would host the Dolphins in the first round.
