Women's rugby closes season at USA Rugby College 7s National Championship

TUCSON, Arizona The American International College women's rugby team dropped both of its playoff matches at the USA Rugby Collegiate 7s Championship on Sunday, May 26.

RESULTS:
Bowl Semifinal: Davenport 26, AIC 0
Shield Final: Penn State 36, AIC 7

STATS LEADERS:

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • AIC and Davenport faced off in the first game of the day, and Davenport bookended the play in the first half with two tries and two conversions to take a 14-0 lead into the break.
  • Davenport scored twice more, with one conversion, in the second half for a 26-0 win.
  • The Yellow Jackets shifted to the Shield Final, and faced Penn State for the second time. The Nittany Lions scored the first two tries of the game, but failed to convert on either, leaving the door open for an AIC comeback. Sophomore Ashley Torres scored to bring AIC within five, and rookie Kassidy Pothier succeeded on the conversion to cut Penn State's edge to just three. However, Penn State was able to strike back almost immediately, scoring a try and conversion to take a 17-7 lead at halftime.
  • In the second half, Penn State controlled play, scoring three tries and two conversions to earn the seventh-place spot in the tournament with a 36-7 final.
