SPRINGFIELD, Massachusetts — Graduate student Annekkia Ritter-Truxal has become a cornerstone of the AIC Women's Rugby program, known for her leadership, competitiveness, and unwavering support for her teammates. A fifth-year student from Idaho Falls, Idaho, Ritter-Truxal is completing her master's degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling while managing the demanding responsibilities of life as a student-athlete and campus leader.
Her journey to AIC was an unexpected one. Initially planning to enter the military, she shifted her path after receiving a call from the AIC coaching staff. The opportunity to play collegiate rugby presented her with a challenge unlike anything her family had experienced before, and she embraced it as a chance to prove herself and forge her own identity.
Beyond the rugby pitch, Ritter-Truxal is deeply committed to service and student support. Through her involvement with College Steps, she works closely with students with disabilities as they develop essential life and academic skills. She also contributes to the AIC community through her work with the Saremi Center and as a Resident Advisor, roles that allow her to encourage and uplift fellow students. Her dedication to helping others is evident in every environment she enters.
Balancing academics, athletics, and service is no small task, yet Ritter-Truxal manages an extraordinary schedule. She works three jobs, completes an intensive internship, attends graduate-level classes, and maintains the discipline required to compete at a championship level. Most days span from early morning to late evening, but her commitment to her team and community never wavers. She even finds time to coach high school rugby, emphasizing the importance of developing the next generation of athletes and reinforcing that her sport is about more than competition—it is about growth, mentorship, and giving back.
Her resilience was tested during her sophomore year when she tore her ACL, a significant setback that challenged her physically and mentally. Instead of discouraging her, the experience deepened her appreciation for the sport and strengthened her leadership role within the program. The injury provided her with a new perspective on perseverance and teamwork.
Over the course of her AIC career, she has experienced numerous memorable moments, including a championship run in her freshman year. Entering the postseason as underdogs after falling to both semifinal and final opponents during regular-season play, that title victory remains one of her most meaningful accomplishments. Following this past year's championship win in November, Ritter-Truxal officially became a three-time NIRA National Champion—an achievement that highlights her consistency, resilience, and lasting impact on the program.
Looking beyond graduation, she hopes to remain connected to athletics through a professional career as a sports psychologist or counselor for Professional Bull Riding (PBR). Her experiences as a student-athlete have equipped her with the empathy, discipline, and perspective necessary to support others navigating high-performance environments.
Annekkia Ritter-Truxal represents the very best of AIC's student-athletes. Her commitment to her team, her academic pursuits, and her community exemplifies the values of the Yellow Jackets, and her legacy is defined not only by championships, but by the positive and lasting impact she continues to make on those around her.
