Baseball splits their doubleheader vs. Saint Anselm

SPRINGFIELD, Massachusetts - The American International College baseball team split their doubleheader against Saint Anselm on Saturday, March 23, falling 10-2 in game one and winning game two in a dramatic 4-3 finish.

HOW IT HAPPENED GAME ONE:
  • Saint Anselm got on the board in the top of the first inning after the Hawks connected on a double and a pair of singles to take the 2-0 lead.
  • The Yellow Jackets tied the game at two in the bottom of the third, when redshirt junior Andrew Ciacciarelli knocked a single into right field, scoring junior Matt Krause and junior Matt Costanza on the play.
  • The Hawks regained their lead in the sixth after drawing a walk and hitting back-to-back singles and made it 3-2. Saint Anselm continued to add runs in the sixth, scoring two from a bases-loaded walk and a passed ball in the next at-bat, 5-2.
  • The Yellow Jackets were unable to battle back, falling to Saint Anselm in game one, 10-2.

HOW IT HAPPENED GAME TWO:
  • Krause ripped a double in the gap, scoring senior Josh Aviles in the top of the first inning to make it 1-0.
  • In the top of the third, the Hawks tied the game at one with a single to right center.
  • In the following inning, Saint Anselm took their first lead of the game on a double to right center.
  • In the fourth inning, the Yellow Jackets knocked in two more runs. Senior Matthew Elliott hit in the first run and redshirt senior Reed Phillips doubled to right field to bring in junior Brendan LaVallee to make it 3-2.
  • The Hawks would yet again tie the game, after a walk and a couple of singles in the top of the seventh.
  • In the bottom of the ninth and Elliott was the lead runner at second, Aviles connected on a single to right center, scoring Elliott to win the game for the Yellow Jackets, 4-3.

BUZZWORTHY:
  • Aviles' walk-off hit in game two was the first walk-off for the Yellow Jackets this season.

COACHES CORNER:
  • "Anytime you lose that first game and come back in the second one to get a split is a good thing," said head coach Nick Callini on splitting their series vs. Saint Anselm.
  • Callini later went on to say, "to see the guys compete is something we've been talking about Just competing and grinding and making things harder for the other team is something we did during the second game and came back with a good result."

NEXT UP:
  • The Yellow Jackets will take on Saint Michael's in a doubleheader at 12 p.m. and 3 p.m. on Sunday, March 24.
