SPRINGFIELD, Massachusetts Nothing less than a win would suffice for the American International College women's soccer team, which faced a do-or-die scenario in its regular season and Northeast-10 Conference finale against Southern New Hampshire University on Tuesday, November 5, and the Yellow Jackets responded with arguably their best game of the season, downing the Penmen 3-0 to earn a spot in the NE10 Championship Tournament.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Penmen nearly struck right away, as Sydney Carney drove a shot from the right side that bounced squarely off of the left post just 2:30 into the game.
- AIC responded by pushing back, and in the 11th minute, senior Jocylyn Deome and redshirt sophomore Josefine Stendahl had bids along the ground that were stifled by Hannah Rose of the Penmen.
- Both teams had a few more close calls in the half, but the break came with the score 0-0.
- In the 57th minute, the Yellow Jackets finally broke the deadlock; a shot from the right side by senior captain Alanna Gracia clanked off of the crossbar, but bounced to Deome at the top of the six; she outworked a defender to jam the ball to sophomore Makayla Bigard, who ran onto the ball and drove it into the net at 56:35.
- The Penmen pushed, but it was AIC notching the next goal as well, as Bigard fed freshman Nicole Gamberoni up the right side for a cross into the box; though Rose got a hand on the ball, it fell right to freshman Trystin Burger, who kneed the ball home at 75:25 to double the lead.
- The next chance was from Bigard as well, as she dished a through ball up the left wing to senior Jennifer Hackett, and the captain came in alone and drove a left-footed shot past Rose at 78:38 to put the game out of reach.
- The Penmen had a few bids from the outside that were easily rejected by sophomore captain Tamra Zippin in the net as the Yellow Jackets celebrated the must-have victory and playoff berth.
POSTSEASON PICTURE:
- The Yellow Jackets vaulted five spots in the standings with the win, rising to sixth place on the season's final day.
- The team will face Adelphi, the third seed, in the Quarterfinal Round; AIC defeated Adelphi 2-0 on October 15 in Springfield behind goals from Hackett and senior Jacinda McCartney.
- The winner of that matchup will face the winner of second-seeded Stonehill and seventh-seeded Southern Connecticut; the Owls scored with under a minute to play in regulation to tie Stonehil 1-1 earlier in the day.
- The other side of the bracket will feature top-seeded Saint Rose battling eighth-seeded Pace and Bentley hosting the Penmen in the four-versus-five matchup; had Southern New Hampshire tied or won, the Penmen would have been the host of that matchup.
- All Quarterfinal games will be at 1 p.m. on Sunday, November 10 and available to watch on the NE10NOW Network.
