Volleyball bounces back at Wildcat Invite, wins both matches

WILMINGTON, Delaware- The American International College volleyball team took part in the second day of the Wildcat Invite hosted by Wilmington University.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
MATCH ONE:
  • After dropping the first point, the Yellow Jackets rallied off four straight to take the 4-1 lead. Tied at six, AIC once again rallied off four points to take the 10-6 lead. The momentum swung in favor of the Yellow Jackets with the score tied at 10. AIC struck for six straight points and forced a timeout by the Rams. Despite late pushes, the Yellow Jackets took the first set, 25-17.
  • AIC kept the momentum going as they took the early 5-1 lead. Up 7-6, the Yellow Jackets took six of the next seven points to take the 13-7 lead. Down 24-17, the Rams tried to make a late push to tie the match, but senior outside hitter Diva Rivas-Reyes killed the pass from senior setter Dolores Kopren to take the set 25-21.
  • Tied at two, the Yellow Jackets made another great run to take the 9-4 lead. The Rams rallied from down 12-5 to make it a two-point game, 13-11. The Rams took the 19-18 lead before the Yellow Jackets made it a 24-22 game. The Rams would tie the set up at 25 and force some extra volleyball. Tied at 27, Rivas-Reyes killed a Kopren set to take the 28-27 lead and then the Yellow Jackets forced a Ram error to take the set 29-27.

MATCH TWO:
  • Under an hour after their win over Jefferson, the Yellow Jackets took the court to take on the Griffins on Chestnut Hill. The Griffins trailed 11-10 when they went on a 7-1 run to take the 17-12 lead. They later went on a 7-2 run to take the first set 25-16.
  • Unhappy with their performance, AIC came out ready to play in the second set. Trailing 7-9, the Yellow Jacket went on a 18-4 run to take the second set and tie the match up at one.

GAME NOTES:
  • With a kill in the third set against Holy Family, senior outside hitterDiva Rivas-Reyesbecame the fifth player in program history with 1,000 career kills. She also jumped into fourth place in program history with 1,047 kills. She currently trials Sarah Neaves, who has 1,148 career kills, by 101.
  • Rivas-Reyes also moved into sixth place in program history in points with 1,113. She currently trails Zane Berzina who scored 1123 points in her four years at AIC.
  • The Yellow Jackets combined for six blocks against Jefferson on Saturday afternoon. That is their third best blocking performance of the year. AIC had seven blocks against Holy Family yesterday, and against Chestnut Hill on September 1.

NEXT UP:
  • The Yellow Jackets will open their season on Tuesday, September 11 against Stonehill at 7 p.m.
