Women's soccer defeats No. 3 Mercy in double overtime

BRIDGEPORT, Connecticut- The American International College women's soccer team were impressive on the defensive side of the field, and were able to find late offense as well as the Yellow Jackets upset No. 3 Mercy College 1-0 in double overtime on Sunday, September 2.

Record: AIC moves to 1-1-0 overall, while Mercy moves to 1-0-1 overall.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Freshman forward Caroline Porter had the first shot of the game in the 19th minute and it was saved by a great diving play by Mercy's sophomore goalkeeper Melissa Torres.
  • The Yellow Jackets had another good look for a goal just before the half, as redshirt freshman midfielder Annina Sankoh barely missed the back of the net on a shot that went just to the left of the target.
  • Meanwhile, AIC's defense looked stellar once again in the first half, as they held Mercy off the scoresheet.
  • The defense continued to be great on both ends in the second half. At the end of regulation, the score remained 0-0.
  • It took until the second overtime for senior midfielder Federica Frew to cross in a spectacular pass to freshman forward Ariana Miranda for the game-winning header.

BUZZWORTHY:

  • In Miranda's second colligate game, she scored the game-winning goal in double overtime. It was also her first career goal and the first goal for the team this season.
  • The win marked AIC's first victory over a nationally-ranked opponent in 364 days; the Yellow Jackets upset then-No. 7 Bridgeport with a 2-0 win at Abdow Field on September 3, 2017.

  • The Yellow Jackets will travel to Bloomfield, New Jersey, to compete against the Bloomfield College Bears on Wednesday, September 5th at 7 p.m.
