Pace spoils football's home opener

SPRINGFIELD, Massachusetts - The American International College Football team hosted Pace University in its home opener on Saturday, September 15. The Setters were up 6-0 as they headed into the break, but used a late fourth-quarter push to beat AIC, 27-7.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Yellow Jackets and Setters' defenses kept each other at bay most of the first half. In the first 10 possessions, the teams traded punts. The most plays either team put together in a drive was eight by the Setters, on their first drive of the game.
  • With 2:26 left in the first half, the Setters used a two-yard touchdown run to take the 6-0 lead after the missed field goal.
  • The Yellow Jackets got on the board in the fourth quarter on a 28-yard pass from redshirt freshman quarterback Prince Olubakinda to redshirt senior wide receiver Kyle Boyer-Tucker. Redshirt freshman kicker Gianni Romero made the extra point to take the 7-6 lead.
  • On the ensuing kickoff, the Setters ran the kick back 80 yards to retake the lead, 14-7.
  • The Setters went on to score twice more to take the game, 27-22.

GAME NOTES:
  • In just his first game, Olubakinda threw for his first career touchdown.
  • Boyer-Tucker's catch from Olubakinda was his first career receiving touchdown.

NEXT UP:
  • AIC will hit the road for the next two weeks. On September 22, the Yellow Jackets will play St. Anselm followed by a trip to the reigning NE10 Champions, Assumption on the 29.
