Baseball falls short in pitching battle at Saint Rose

ALBANY, New York - The American International College baseball team fell in a tight Northeast-10 Conference contest to the College of Saint Rose in a 1-0 walkoff result on Wednesday, April 11.

FAST FACTS:
Final score: AIC 0, Saint Rose 1
Winning pitcher: Caleb Gregg (3-1) Losing pitcher: Jason Coscio, AIC (1-5).
Records: AIC moves to 13-17 overall and 4-9 in conference play; Saint Rose improves to 10-14 overall and 3-6 in the NE10.
Location: Plumeri Sports Complex (Albany, New York)

STATS LEADERS:
AIC:
Joe Kemlage (6.0 innings pitched, no earned runs, five hits, six strikeouts)
Matt Krause (2-for-4, one double)
Will Johnson (1-for-4)
Ian O'Brien (one walk, one stolen base)

Saint Rose:
Greg Musk (8.0 innings pitched, no earned runs, three hits, 11 strikeouts)
Brian Uliana (3-for-5, one RBI)
Nicholas Teitter (2-for-3, one double)

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Though freshman starting pitcher Joe Kemlage was dealing through six innings - not allowing any Golden Knights to score while also recording six strikeouts - the Yellow Jackets could not get to Saint Rose starter Greg Musk, either, notching just three hits against Musk through eight innings.
  • AIC found itself in scoring position just three times throughout the game due to Musk's efforts. In the third inning, sophomore right fielder Matt Krause singled and advanced to second on an error; he went to third on a balk, but the frame ended on a strikeout. In the seventh, freshman catcher Ian O'Brien walked and stole second; but Musk again struck out the Yellow Jackets to end the top of the inning. Krause hit a two-out double in the eighth, with the score knotted at 0-0, but would move no further.
  • With a walkoff opportunity in the ninth, Saint Rose put a runner on base after Matt McKinnon was hit by a pitch with one out. McKinnon subsequently stole second base. Freshman second baseman Angel Mendez made a diving stop on a ground ball for the second out of the inning, with McKinnon moving to third on the play. But Brian Uliana hit a slow roller and beat out the throw from AIC junior shortstop Brendan Carter to send in the only run of the game and give the Golden Knights the 1-0 win.

BUZZWORTHY:
  • This is the first time this season that the Yellow Jackets have experienced a walkoff loss.
  • Krause has now had multi-hit games in each of his past three contests. He has also doubled in both of his past two games.
  • Kemlage had his second-longest appearance of the season and fewest hits allowed in a start this season. This is also his first start where he has not allowed any earned runs.

COACH'S CORNER:
  • "This was a really, for all intents and purposes, a really well-played game by both sides," said AIC baseball head coach Nick Callini. "It was a pitchers' duel - it was a 0-0 game until the ninth - and they were able to come up with one key at bat to get it. It was unfortunately nothing more than a ground ball up the middle that Brendan made a nice play on, and their kid just got down the line and beat it out."
  • "It's an unfortunate way to lose, but I was really happy with our guys we made a lot of plays during the game to keep it 0-0," Callini added. "Saint Rose had a lot more opportunities than we did to score. Musk threw the ball really well, and didn't really give us many opportunitiesBut we made some key plays, Joey [Kemlage] and [redshirt senior pitcher Jason] Coscio both made some key pitches to get us out of jams, and Mendez made an incredible diving play up the middle in that ninth inning to just give us a chance to get to that next play and give us two outs. But then they put a ball in the right place."

NEXT UP:
  • AIC hosts Pace University for a three-game NE10divisional series on Friday, April 13 and Saturday, April 14.
  • Friday's game will be played at 3 p.m.; Saturday's doubleheader begins at 12 p.m. at Bedard Field.
