SPRINGFIELD, Massachusetts - The American International College baseball team fell to Pace University, 9-3, to open a three-game series with the Setters on Friday, April 13.

Records: AIC moves to 13-18 and 4-10 in conference play; Pace improves to 13-9-1 overall and 7-5 in the Northeast-10 Conference.

STATS LEADERS:
AIC:
Matt Costanza (2-for-3, two runs scored, one double, one RBI, two walks)
Andrew Ciacciarelli (1-for-4, two RBI)
Brendan Carter (1-for-3, three stolen bases)

Pace:
Kyle Cashman (6.0 innings pitched, three earned runs, seven hits, four strikeouts)
Michael Barbato (4-for-5, two RBI)
Matthew Kurdewan (2-for-4, three RBI, one double)

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • AIC found its way on the board in the bottom of the first; sophomore designated hitter Matt Costanza had a leadoff double, and moved his way around to home on a pair of groundouts, giving the Yellow Jackets an early 1-0 lead.
  • Pace tied the game in the top of the second, and added three more runs to take a 4-1 lead by the top of the third. However, AIC got a run back in the bottom of the third, with Costanza scoring on an RBI single to center from redshirt sophomore first baseman Andrew Ciacciarelli.
  • Sophomore pitcher James Flahive pitched three shutout innings between the fourth and sixth to keep AIC in the game; in the top of the seventh, however, the Setters tacked on four more runs to go up 8-2.
  • AIC came within 8-3 when junior shortstop Brendan Carter scored after Costanza reached base on an error, but the Setters added on another run in the top of the eighth to go up 9-3.
  • The Yellow Jackets loaded the bases in the bottom of the ninth, but a deep fly ball from sophomore right fielder Matt Krause was caught just shy of the fence by the Pace left fielder, ending the game.

COACH'S CORNER:
  • "Our offense did a great job creating opportunities, but we just didn't come through with a hit," said AIC baseball head coach Nick Callini. "All of a sudden, it could be tied 4-4 or we're up in that game, so we had some opportunities, so credit to them - this is what good teams do, is they got some opportunities late and put some runs on the board and expanded their lead. We battled and gave ourselves some chances."
  • "Coming back tomorrow, we have a chance to win the series still," he added. "That's ultimately the goal every time you get into these series. So we'll go home, get rest, come back tomorrow and really have the same approach and try not to make the same mistakes."

NEXT UP:
  • The Yellow Jackets and Setters return to Bedard Field for a doubleheader on Saturday, April 14.
  • First pitch is set for 12 p.m.
