HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Yellow Jackets seemed like they would dominate the game early, scoring twice in a 57-second span as junior midfielder Mikayla Demanche opened the scoring on a free-position goal at 3:51 and then set up Bates for her first at 4:48.
  • However, Bridgeport struck back with two of its own, as Courtney Forry and Shyla Murray tallied to tie the game before it was ten minutes old.
  • The guests then took the lead just past the midpoint of the half, with Amanda Fitzpatrick netting her first of the year at 15:01. However, Bates had a response less than a minute and a half later to tie it 3-3.
  • Barbara Orsini put Bridgeport back in the lead at the 23:45 mark of the frame, and then the Purple Knights drew a man-up situation, but could not extend the lead; though Orsini converted the EMO, freshman attacker Brianna O'Brien struck shorthanded at 25:59. That meant Bridgeport carried a slim 5-4 lead at the break.
  • The Purple Knights came out firing in the second half, scoring two in quick succession as Julia Ruscio tallied just 1:16 in and then Orsini capped the hat trick while up a player just 55 seconds later.
  • However, thanks to a string of cards, AIC muscled back into the game; Bates and Demanche each scored with EMOs to cut the deficit to one, and then Brittany Hutchison scored a pair three minutes apart, giving AIC the 8-7 lead with 19:34 left in regulation.
  • Murray tallied a tying goal for the visitors, but once again AIC had a response in the form of Bates, who struck twice in a 54-second span to put the hosts up with 12:55 left.
  • Forry pulled the Purple Knights back within one, finishing a hat trick to do so at 20:25, but Bates had her second hat trick completed barely over a minute later, scoring the eventual game-winning tally at 21:48. Demanche added to the lead just 28 seconds later, and though Bridgeport scored with 4:30 left off of the stick of Forry, they would get no closer; Hutchison closed out her hat trick and the scoring from freshman attacker Emilee Giacondino at 29:43 to set the 13-10 final.
RECORD BREAKER ROY:
  • Roy had already tied the single-game record for caused turnovers in a game earlier this season with six in the home opener against Stonehill, but on Friday she set a new high-water mark that is hers alone, forcing seven turnovers.
  • After the game, Roy was not shy about wanting to own all the caused turnover records she could, saying "It's awesome to be able to do something like that in my sophomore year, because I can strive to break that record and more in my next two years. We work hard together and we work hard to achieve goals, and I couldn't do it without my team or my family."
A HAT TRICK OF HAT TRICKS, AND ONE EXTRA:
  • Demanche, Hutchison and Bates each recorded hat tricks, and Bates had two of those in the game.
  • On the year, 10 hat tricks have been recorded by Yellow Jackets players through five games, with Bates and Hutchison dueling for the team lead, appropriately, at three each.
  • Of the performance today, Bates said, "We worked hard all sixty minutes and we played as a team. The defense did a great job of getting the ball for us, giving us the ability to finish strong."
UP NEXT:
  • The Yellow Jackets fly to Florida to face the Lions of Saint Leo University on Monday, March 12 at 1 p.m.
