HOW IT HAPPENED:
Game One:
  • For the second straight game, AIC got out to an early 2-0 advantage. Sophomore third baseman Matt Costanza led off the inning with a single to left field; redshirt junior Reed Phillips then hit a double, advancing to third on the throw, and Costanza beat out the throw to home, putting the Yellow Jackets up 1-0. Freshman catcher Anthony Clark followed with a groundout to send Phillips home for a 2-0 lead.
  • Joe Caico cut the AIC lead in half when he scored on a wild pitch in the second inning.
  • The Yellow Jackets' lead went back to two runs in the fourth inning, when freshman second baseman Angel Mendez had an RBI single, scoring junior designated hitter Matthew Elliott.
  • New Haven was able to tie the game at 3-3 in the sixth inning, and took its first lead of the weekend, 4-3, in the seventh. The Chargers tacked on an insurance run in the eighth inning, and the Yellow Jackets were unable to overcome New Haven's 5-3 advantage.

Game Two:
  • AIC got on the board first again, with Costanza again hitting a leadoff single. Costanza advanced to third base on a groundout and a balk, and he scored on a groundout RBI from Phillips.
  • But New Haven would answer quickly, adding two runs in the bottom of the second inning to jump ahead 2-1.
  • AIC got back on top in the top of the fourth inning, with a single to lead off the inning from Krause and a triple from Clark that tied the game up. Mendez then had an RBI single that sent Clark home and put the Yellow Jackets back ahead, 3-2.
  • That lead would unfortunately be short-lived, with the Chargers adding four runs in the bottom half of the frame and jumping ahead 6-3. They would later tack on three more to jump out to an insurmountable 9-3 advantage.

BUZZWORTHY:
  • AIC has scored at least one run in the first inning for the past five consecutive games.
  • With three stolen bases today, Mendez ranks tied for second in the NE10 in that category.
  • Saturday's contests concluded a span of five games in four days and 10 games in the past 10 days.

COACH'S CORNER:
  • "Definitely not the results that we wanted, but like I told the team after the game, we played a lot of good baseball," said AIC baseball head coach Nick Callini. "And if we continue to play this way over the course of time, we're going to get a lot of wins, and I'm confident that we'll be in the playoffs come the end of the year. they're a good team, they're sixth in the country, and there's a reason they're sixth in the country."
  • "I think everybody's tired after this," Callini added about the recent games. "It's been a long stretch going back to last Thursday, where we played Thursday and then had the two doubles on the weekend, and then we came into this week and we played Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and double today. I think a couple days off will be good for the guys to refresh both mentally and physically, and I think at the same time they're ready to go. I'm expecting them to be ready to go at practice."

NEXT UP:
  • AIC will next play at home on Thursday, April 5, a single game against Merrimack College.
  • First pitch at Bedard Field is set for 3:30 p.m.
