Volleyball downs No.2 Adelphi to reach NE10 Finals

GARDEN CITY, New York- The American International College volleyball team headed to Long Island to take on Adelphi University in the Northeast-10 Semifinals on Friday, November 9.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Tied at eight in the first set, AIC went on an 8-2 run to make it a six-point game, 16-10. The Panthers used a late run to make it a 24-20 game. The NE10 Player of the Year, junior outside hitter Jana Potic, ended the set with a kill on a pass from NE10 Setter of the Year, senior Dolores Kopren.
  • The Yellow Jackets and Panthers were tied at 14 when the Panthers went on a short run to take a 18-15 lead. AIC rallied back to tie it up at 21. The teams traded points before Adelphi took the set 25-22.
  • In the third set, the teams battled to a 15 all score when the Yellow Jackets turned on the power. AIC went on an 11-3 run to take the third set 25-18.
  • The Panthers took the fourth set 25-9.
  • After dropping the first point in the fifth set, the Yellow Jackets jumped ahead 6-3 and forced an Adelphi timeout. The Panthers fought back and forced a Yellow Jacket timeout as they brought the score to 11-9. Out of the timeout, AIC took the next two points. Leading 14-12, freshman outside hitter Andrea Serra killed a pass from Kopren to end the match.

BUZZWORTHY:
  • The NE10 released their of the year awards winners on Wednesday, November 7. The Yellow Jackets headlined the awards as they took home three major awards. Potic earned Player of the Year and first team honors. Kopren was selected as Setter of the Year and was selected to first team all-conference. Serra earned second-team honors. Rounding out the selections was head coachMatt Cribbinwith Coach of the Year honors.
  • The NCAA announced its thirdregional rankings for the 2018 season on Wednesday, November 7. The Yellow Jackets were slotted sixth in the East Region. Leading the East Region was a NE10 foe, the University of New Haven, followed by Adelphi University. Daemen College and Molloy College are sitting in third and fourth, while Holy Family University is in fifth.
  • Kopren recently passed Stephanie O'Brien in career assists, placing her second in program history.Kopren currently has 4,055 assists in just three seasons.
  • Rivas-Reyesis the fifth player in AIC program history to pass 1,000 career kills. She currently sits in third place in program history with 1,257 kills while trailingEllisha Terry, who had 1,286 kills from 2008-11. Should Rivas-Reyes pass Terry, she would hold the rally scoring era program record.
  • Junior outside hitterJana Poticrecorded her 1,000th career kill at Adelphi on September 29. Currently, Potic has 1,228 kills, which is good enough for fifth place in program history. With her performance against The College of Saint Rose, she jumped Sarah Neaves, who had 1,148 kills, for fourth place. She now trails her teammate Rivas-Reyes for third place.
  • Potic jumped ahead of Rivas-Reyes in total points in program history on October 2 at Franklin Pierce. Potic recently pasted Neaves in total points. She currently has 1,427, with Rivas-Reyes right behind her with 1,337.5 career points. Potic is now chasingEllisha Terry, who had 1,487.5 points from 2008-11. Should Potic pass Terry, she would hold the rally scoring era program record.

NEXT UP:
  • The Yellow Jackets will take on Southern Connecticut State on Saturday, November 10 at 5 p.m. in the NE10 Championship. This marks the first time in the rally scoring era that the Yellow Jackets have made the conference championship game.
