Garcia scores 2 goals in men's soccer draw with Merrimack

NORTH ANDOVER, Massachusetts - The American International College men's soccer team played to a 3-3 draw with Merrimack College on Saturday, September 23.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Sophomore forward Jovanni Garcia had a pair of goals in the first half - first, he gave AIC a 1-0 lead less than two minutes into the game. After Merrimack came back to tie the game at one goal apiece, Garcia took advantage of a turnover from the Warriors goalkeeper to notch his second of the game at 27:50 and give AIC a 2-1 lead.
  • The Warriors scored in the 37th minute to make the score 2-2 at the half.
  • Graduate student midfielder Alexandre Frank had a header goal off a free kick from Jake Durham in the 65th minute to give AIC a 3-2 lead.
  • That lead would hold until the 87th minute, when Merrimack's Aasmund Joehdalconverted ona penalty kick to tie the game at three goals apiece.
  • In 20 minutes of overtime, neither team was able to score. AIC had a great bid that found the back of the net, but it was whistled offside first.


GAME NOTES:
  • Garcia's two-goal showing is the first multi-goal game by a member of the Yellow Jackets this season.
  • Garcia's first goal - at 1:48 - was the earliest a goal has been scored by AIC all season.
  • AIC is the first team to earn points on Merrimack's turf this season, and this is also the first time AIC has earned points against the Warriors since 2011.
  • This was the first time in the 2017 season that AIC played to overtime after playing six overtime contests a year ago.
  • With the AIC women's soccer team's 0-0 result in double overtime against No. 19 Southern New Hampshire on Saturday, this marked the first time since October 8, 2013 that both the men's and women's soccer teams have played double-overtime contests on the same day. On that day, the men's soccer team beat Southern Connecticut by a score of 2-1, while the women's soccer team drew with Saint Rose in a 0-0 final.

  • "There are not many teams that come to Merrimack and not only get a result, but also completely play them off their own field," said AIC men's soccer coachLuke Perry. " I'm very proud of how the team played tonight and we're getting stronger and stronger each game and I know we're going to peak at the right time."

  • The Yellow Jackets close out their road stretch with a trip to West Haven, Connecticut, to face the University of New Haven on Tuesday, September 26.
